we all look at each other as mike runs to will's room, grabbing the picture of the shadow monster in the process.

the one he had drawn to visualize his terrors.

"the shadow monster" dustin says.

"it got will the day on the field! the doctor said it's like a virus, it infected him" mike explains one of the many things the doctors had said earlier.

"and so this virus is connecting him to the tunnels?" christie asks mike, confused. they question her as to how she knew. "i have my inputs!" she says and they continue on.

her input was me.

"well, to the tunnels, to the monsters! the upside down! everything!"

"woah! slow down, slow down" steve says. i cock a brow at him, we are speaking at 100 mph and i swear his brain is functioning at 2 mph.

"okay, so the shadow monsters inside everything and if the vines feels something like pain so does will"

"and so does dart"

"yeah. like what mr. clarke taught us"

"the hive mind" i state.

"hive mind?" steve questions. i swear that boy is clueless about everything in life.

"a collective consciousness. it's a super-organism" christie explains to him and everyone in the group give her a look for the 40th time.

"what? pretty girls can be smart too" she speaks twirling her newly black hair before blowing a large, pink bubble with her gum.

"and this is the thing that controls everything. it's the brain" mike continues, pointing to the drawing of the shadow monster.

"like the mind flayer" dustin says. he looks like he is connecting pieces to a puzzle inside of his head. lucas snaps and all the boys look around at each other.

christie's eyes go wide. how the fuck does she know?

"the what?" steve, max and i question them. dustin goes over and grabs out a dungeons and dragons book. of course christie knew then.

she used to always play the game with her guy friends growing up. she was the best at it, that's what all her guy friends said at least. she was their leader.
