NATALIE D'ANGELO

"natty!" i hear my mom yell from somewhere in the maze of brown boxes. i stand on the tips of my toes as i peek over the huge stack of boxes that stands perched in front of me.

"yes?" i ask her, when her and i finally make eye contact over the boxes.

"can you come grab this box for me and bring it out to your dad?" my mom asks me.

i jump over an opened box or two as i make my way to my mother. i take the hefty box and she says a quick "thank you!" before i turn on my heels

i walk all the way out to the large u-haul truck trying my best to not trip over anything so i won't fall flat on my face.

i hand the box to my dad. black writing on it says 'kitchen'. "thanks champ!" he smiles widely as he puts it on top of another box. "yep"

my head nods and i turn on my heels once again, walking back inside. my bestest friend oliver stands on the right side of my mother, helping her move our almost empty home closer to the door.

"ollie."

he turns towards me breaking the conversation he is having with my mother. "yeah?"

i beckon him with a motion of my pointer finger. "come on let's go on a quick walk down the street."

my mom lets it happen because she knows that i am going to miss him more than anything. leaving my best friend since i was 2?! we havent gone a day without seeing each other in 11. except for the time the two of us got the flu. we still walkied each other though.

we walk down the driveway and turn right towards the trail at the end of the street.

"are you excited to move?" he asks me. i shake my head briskly. "not at all."

"why?" ollie cocks a brow at me.

"i'm leaving here, new york, this place i love especially because you and becca are here... now i have to move to some small boring town in indiana?!"

"we live in a small boring town here we're not in new york city" ollie laughs and i do too. i guess he is kind of right.

"yeah but with you and becca and heather and eric it's not boring."

we finish our walk and walk back to my house where we quickly finish packing the truck up. when my sister swings down, closing the door to the truck i sigh and turn around, looking at ollie.

i attack him in a tight bear hug. i can feel him start to cry which makes small tears come rolling down my face. "don't forget about me okay?"

"how could i ever oll? i could never. you're my best friend."

we stay there for a few moments before my mom and dad both tell us we have to leave.

i dont want to but i know we have to.

"bye oll"

"bye nat"

i hug him one last time before i get into christie's car. my parents are going to go in the u-haul and christie is going to drive her car.

it was something we had planned a few nights before we left. we thought that it would make the ride smoother. and it did. sooner rather than later both the cars start and we are off.

the 8 hour or so drive consists of me devouring a whole family size bag of chips, christie having to pee every hour, us jamming out to music and me fangirling over seeing a family of deer.

it made me so happy. i watch the sides of the road as we drive. signs that read bear warnings, deer crossing and speed limits. i felt my heart sink when i see the sign that says "welcome to hawkins" on the side of the road.

i could shoot myself in the head. leaving my amazing place for a boring town in what feels like the middle of nowhere.

we drive around the small town following my mom and dad in the u-haul truck. we pull onto a street and eventually turn into a driveway.

the house is beyond nice. bigger than our old one. it's a dark blue and has a white trim. it's truly a nice color.

i walk up and into it. taking in everything. it really is huge. my eyes are traveling a mile a minute as i glance at the many new things.

my mom walks in behind me. "nat your room is the first one on the left when coming up the stairs, christie yours is the second on the left, ours is the last on the right and there's 3 spare rooms."

"damn" i say under my breath. there was only 2 rooms in our last house. one for my parents and one for me. christie got the basement.

we get 95 percent of the truck unloaded and most of our boxes in our separate rooms. christie and i lay my mattress on the floor and i sigh, sitting on it, watching as she leaves the room.

my head turns.

4:00 the clock reads next to me.

should give me time to explore right?

right.

i get up and walk down the stairs where my mom is putting wrapped dishes in empty cupboards.

"mom i'm gonna go explore where's the bikes?"

"garage, your father put them there" she tells me and i nod.

"thank you."

"you're welcome."

i walk out to the garage and grab my bike riding away from my new house. my feet pedal as i take in the new air and the new surroundings.

i ride all the way to the woods where i ride through a trail up until i hear the voices of some boys.

"dustin shut up!" i hear one of the voices yell. "but i'm righttt!"

"both of you shut up! will are you okay?"

"i fell and skinned my elbow that's all!" the boy, i believe named will, stands up, dusting his butt off.

they keep on arguing and i shake my head as they come into my view. my head turns as they walk by. good i don't stand out.

when they pass me they stop in their tracks before turning my way. one of the boys speaks. "who are you?" he bad dark skin and a green t-shirt on.

"who are you?" i retaliate back at him. "i'm lucas, that's dustin, that's will and that's mike" he points to the three other boys that are with him.

they all stood there, two of them smiling.

the one, mike if i can recall, looks at me with utter disgust. but i am more than okay because i give the look right back.

"are you new?" will asks. he's about my height maybe an inch or two taller with a haircut shaped like a bowl.. "yeah, just moved here. my family is unpacking."

i sit back on my bike turning it to go away from the boys. they aren't much of conversationists and mostly just stare at me, breathing with their mouths slightly parted.

i start pedaling away but i hear one of them yell after me, a lisp interlacing with their voice.. "what's your name?!"

my body stops the pedaling thus stopping the bike. my body twists to look at them. i am far away from them but i yell back anyways.

"natalie!"
