"Gah... Those guys really did a number on me..." Jack mumbles as he collapses onto one knee. He was just on the roof after having seen a small group of demons. Everyone at the academy was out doing their own thing so nobody could have heard the fight. He struggles to get back on two feet but he's too weak as he collapses. "Lucky that I'm not bleeding..." Jack chuckles weakly as he musters enough strength to roll on his back. That's when he finds himself looking up at a girl who seemed to appear out of nowhere. Her black hair is secured by two X shaped hairbands, and her purple eyes seem to be kept in a perpetual sleepy look. What really stands out to Jack are the two blue orbs floating by her side and the tenkan on her head. "...Hello there." Jack says weakly.
"Wow... You're not scared of me?" The strange girl asks. "Do you need a hand?"
"Yeah, thanks." Jack says as the mysterious girl helps him get back up. They end up sitting on the bench there as Jack does his best to recover. "I mean I'm not scared, just relieved that someone other than those demons was here. Are you a ghost? You kinda appeared out of nowhere."
"Yes, I am a ghost... I'm Yuko." The ghost girl replies.
"Well, I'm Jack." Jack says.
"I was hiding from those demons... Until you came." Yuko says. "Thank you for chasing them off."
"It's part of my job description." Jack chuckles. "I'm a demon hunter, though I try to keep this fact low key because I don't want to scare anyone- not to be offensive or anything."
"Don't worry... I'm not offended." Yuko replies. "Even I'm scared of demons... I'm afraid they'll make me go crazy."
"Well it was a good thing I stopped them before they could do that to you." Jack says. "But I myself have had quite a few close brushes with death. There was actually one time here in the academy where I swore it was going to be my deathbed."
"Really...? What happened?" Yuko asks.
"There was this strange demon. It was posing as a cat and I didn't know any better." Jack begins. "It suddenly lunged at me, scratching up my arms with reckless abandon and trying to go for my jugular. Thinking quick I threw the crazy cat demon off of me before shooting it. If it hadn't been for my quick actions and getting myself to the infirmary I would have died from blood loss- I may have very well joined you in haunting this academy." He finishes as he shows off the many scars on his arms.
"Wow..." Yuko says, her formerly sunken eyes now wide with shock. "Being a demon hunter must be hard... Knowing that these demons could easily end your life at any moment..."
"It's hard, but it's something I've dedicated my life to." Jack replies. "Student by day, hunter by night, I sometimes get too into it and don't give myself a moment's rest. That's when I end up passing out from exhaustion."
"I actually may have stumbled upon you a few times... Just passed out on the ground... I remember watching over someone until they regained their senses..." Yuko says, racking up her memories. "That may have been you I was watching over... I guess you could say I was your guardian spirit for that moment being..."
"And that's not the only thing that's happened to me." Jack replies. "This might have happened even before I came to this academy, I'm not sure when exactly it occurred." He adds as he removes a contact from his right eye, revealing it to be red. "I lost my right eye in a fight with a demon hunter. I don't know what I did but something must have really pissed him off and he shot me in the eye. I'm amazed I managed to beat him, and I got this replacement as a result. This is what I like to call my all seeing eye, as it's how I see demons."
"I can sense a demon hunter's aura coming from it... I can see where it's power to see demons comes from." Yuko says, taking another look at Jack's red eye.
"You can do that?" Jack asks.
"I can... Some ghosts can sense auras like these." Yuko explains. "I guess I'm one of those lucky ghosts." Once the ghost is satisfied Jack puts the contact back in making his right eye match his left again, and he looks at Yuko.
"Promise that you won't tell anyone?" Jack asks. "When the time is right, they will know."
"I'll carry that promise to my grave... Should I ever be able to rest in peace." Yuko replies as the two shake hands. Her hand is cold to the touch but it doesn't bother Jack as he looks up at the night sky.
"Do you think you'll ever be able to rest?" Jack asks. "As a demon hunter I feel like I don't get any. I always nap in class when I get the chance because I'm spending all night hunting for demons."
"I'm not sure..." Yuko replies. "I do know that your job is a dangerous one... I hope that it doesn't happen... But should you die... I'm always open to talk... Open to be an eternal friend..."
"I appreciate the offer." Jack says. "You're a cool ghost. You're not as scary as others may think."
"I'm touched that you think that." Yuko replies. "Well... It is getting dark now."
"Welp, time for me to get going." Jack says. "I'll see you another time Yuko." He adds as he and Yuko hug for a few seconds before Jack bolts off. Yuko stays on the roof, watching Jack vanish off into the distance with his hunter gear at the ready with a smile on her face.
"Best of luck out there... Jack..." Yuko says softly.
Jack's thoughts: I never thought it would happen, but I became acquainted with a pretty cool ghost. Maybe next time when it's dark, she'll appear to me once more so we can chat, just like normal people.
