If I studied anymore, I think my head would burst. I took a break knowing the kids would be due to get out of school after a while. My mother had volunteered to do the nannying which was a huge help for me.
I just couldn't get my mind off of whether I was doing the right thing or not. Had rick been through enough or was I just being played into feeling guilty for what was right.
I grabbed the bottle of wine out of the fridge and popped it open. Not even wanting to pour a glass I took it straight to the head. Leaning up against the island I stood there sipping and contemplating on what i should do. Then my phone broke my train of thought. It wasn't a number I was familiar with but it was a number from l.a so I answered.
"Hello?"
"Madison baby don't hang up on me." My father called out.
"What do you want dad?"
" just to talk? What is this I hear about you taking me off the case?"
"Yes. You're off the case Dad. There's nothing more to discuss." I replied setting the bottle onto the counter.
"Was this your mothers doing? I knew she would do something."
"Dad I don't want to talk about this. Mom had nothing to do with this at all. She doesn't even know I'm doing it. This was my decision."
"Are you thinking logically? Do you understand what this case means!?"
"I'm aware.. that's why I've made my final decision."
"Madison this is not a joke this is your case and last shot at justice. Now I told you I'm here for you regardless of your mother and I."
"Yeah you call cheating on your wife and abandoning your family righteous. I don't want anything to do with you. And I don't need you on my case."
"I get you're mad Madison... but I'm still your father."
"I don't know what to call you."
"Enough. Show some respect."
"You don't deserve any. Not after everything that you've led to happen."
"Oh now I'm all to blame. Have you tried living with your mother. She is unbearable."
"You know what... I have... how could you leave her out on the streets?!"
"She caused the damn fire Madison. Why are you letting her get into your head!"
I exhaled walking upstairs to the baby room where she was beginning to move around in her crib. Lowering my voice I took a deep breath.
"Dad can we just talk about this at a later time?"
"Why? Is she there?"
"No your grandchild who you haven't laid eyes on is awakening and I need to go be a mother."
My father paused as if he was coming to a realization. "Madison baby. I'm sorry... sorry for everything, can we start over?"
"Dad I'll always be your daughter. I just want things to be right. Listen—let's just talk later?"
"Ok. Okay Madison."
I hung up putting the phone in my back pocket watching Vrai struggle to get comfortable. She was so use to being near someone when she slept, I knew that's what her little mind was aiming for.
I fell in love all over again watching my darling girl find peace with the touch of my hand soothing her tummy. Just as I got her settled I could hear the front door opening and shut.
