These are the hardest ones for me, I've made new covers and changed the titles countless times, and I've even changed the plot after the tile AND COVER were already made. Now listen, I know my sister has already put up a chapter on how she makes them, but what did y'all get from that other than an app and a how to. Right now, I'm showing you what covers really pull me as a reader in. I know my opinion is small, but many other ppl do think this as well. I've asked stilestastic tips for a new writer in how to get more reads, and she said that covers and titles are a big part of it, and I completely agree with her.
I'm not saying make it exactly as I say, and I'm not saying that if you do it any differently it's ugly or it's not good. I'm saying that sometimes a cover with huge explosions and a cool font or a cover with your face claim and peter next to each other, or even a serious or dramatic cover aren't your only options.
Try using a simple font, and a simple picture. Make it pleasing to the eye. Too much makes someone want to run, but dont put a title on a black screen.
Here's a few of my covers as examples:
(Note that some of these I deleted off my phone so I had to screen shot them off my works list so they're a bit fuzzy...and by some I mean all)
See how most of them are relatively simple. Especially the last one. When your making your cover experiment around, mess with stickers and fonts. Put the font behind the main picture, mess with where your vantage point is, draw the readers eyes to the words instead, mess with the coloring, do whatever you want, but sometimes it's best to just keep it simple. As for titles...
Many ppl, and I fall guilty for this so hopefully writing this will help me, struggle with finding a nice title. You don't want it too long, but you don't want something silly like the word love. I prefer one word, simple things, like a book with one word will draw my attention between something long.
For example, i will want to read my sisters book fire proof before I read my book the stars we are because hers is shorter and less intimidating and overwhelming.
A few words is good, and if you need it to be three words to capture the essence of your book go ahead, but I have a rule for my self that more then three words is silly and, as I've said before, overwhelming.
Writing this I've realized I've broke my rule, so I'm joining y'all in the hunt to find a good title.Try messing around with literally devices (if that's what they're called) oxymorons are good, alliteration, this isn't a LD but it still works: a play on words, the list goes on and on. Here's some examples of titles from our books (so plz don't take them)
•Human nature
•rescue
Oof I'm running out of ideas
•the stars we are (this one breaks the rules but it's cute and I thought it was cool)
•idiots in the fine mindThe list could go on if I wasn't lazy enough to exit the page, and I know I'm posting this late and there's no cool gifts but I hope I could help y'all.
Also my pms are open if you need help!!
