Not everyone hates their dad.

It's a common plot in almost every fandom, and I get it, sometimes it's important to the plot, but it's used wrong.

As someone with an alcoholic dad, it's portrayed incorrectly, and somewhat offensive. I have a character whose father is correctly displayed, and only because I know how to display him. I'm not here to tell you not to do it, but I'm here to say that it's ok to make your OC love their father and if not, here's how.

1) HATE
-it's a mean word, and I never use it. I've never said— much less meant— "I hate my dad" because I don't. I love him, how can I not, but I disapprove of his choices in life and the things that he does.
-Hate shouldn't be used to anyone, especially parents, so stray away from it. Say I hate the things he does, or I hate how he drinks, but never say I hate him.
-if your OC truly does hate their dad, then maybe don't make them yell at their parents 24/7. I never once yelled at my dad because I know what will happen if I do. I'll get grounded, my phone will get taken away, etc...

2) ACTIONS
-they drink more throughout the day, and sometimes the only way you can tell they've been drinking is their bloodshot eyes; they've been like this for so long, do you even know any different?
-it's not a surprise when they snap, and you will find yourself rolling your eyes when your with them, but when your not, you feel bad about how you treated them.
-alcoholism isn't by choice. They didn't chose to be alcoholics and they'll try their best to stop for their kid. It's not them, it's just a bad trait of theirs.
-an alcoholic doesn't drink all the time, and when they do their not raging all the time. They are bipolar, however. They'll be mad one moment, so your OC might be scared to go up to them again, but when they do the father will be apologetic and kind, maybe even offer to go buy them like sonic or something I don't know.
-an alcoholic also becomes immune to beer and liquor the more they've had it, so you will find more and more bottles by the couch, etc...
-an abusive father will not be abusive all the time. They tend to have manipulative qualities. They will be kind to their child one moment and angry the next. It'll happen very suddenly as well. She could be laughing with her dad and say something that will make him snap.
-an abusive father will also feel sad after they hit their child, and try to make it better. (no I do not have an abusive father I had to look this up, so please tell me if this is wrong).

And remember, it's not a terrible thing to have healthy relationships with family members. I, for one, absolutely love it.
