「 chapter 3 」
_______________

After a short tour of the place, I'm left with a girl named Beth. A bit older than me, blonde, tall, seems sweet. She says she's Maggie's sister, she's also watching over a baby that apparently is Rick's.

Rick is the one with the baby.

Didn't see that one coming.

Beth and I were having some canned peaches together whilst the child sat on the floor on a blanket, playing with cups. She doesn't look very old, maybe a few months?

I can't help but watch her. "So, what's her name?" I ask.

"Judith. She's a about 8 months old now." Beth answers before shovelling food into her mouth.

I can't imagine taking care of a baby in the kind of world. It must be so hard. They're so loud, and hungry all the time, and just... needy.

I scoop up more peaches from the can.

"Lori - Rick's wife, died just before she was born."  Beth says before the silence got too awkward.
My eyes flick to hers. Rick had a wife? And now she's dead?

"He had a wife?" I question, genuinely shocked. He's such a dick, I didn't expect him to have a family.

"I wouldn't bring it up with him, if I were you. It's still a touchy subject." She says hesitantly.

I nod. "No problem." I don't feel like diving deep into anyones lives or backstories anytime soon.

We continue to eat in silence for a little bit. It's so awkward, I just don't know what to talk about. This is weird.

"I'm sorry you got locked in there all night. It sounded awful, from what I heard." Beth finally breaks it.

I look up at her from my food. "What did you hear?" I ask curiously.

She shrugs, averting her eyes. I can tell feels guilty. "When we were told that there is a new girl here being put alone in a cell for the night, I didn't expect to like... Not meet her. Not bring her food, water, anything. We've never done anything like that before."

I take her words in. So this group has never taken random people in before, or just never dealt with someone bitten before?

"I understand why, it just seemed wrong. Especially now, sitting here talking to you." She continues.

"It's because it was wrong." I reply, getting back to my food. I see her nod out of the corner of my eye, picking at her peaches with her fork.
