「 chapter 33 」
_______________

It was only late afternoon when I heard the gunshots. I was busy cleaning my pistol upstairs, minding my own business.

I stumble to my feet in a panic, rushing to the nearest window and gaze out into the street.

My eyes meet with half a dozen bodies sprawled across the neighbourhood, pools of blood beneath them, several strangers were running around with different weapons in their hands.

What the hell?

Spears, machetes, knifes, hatchets, anything to make you bleed.

They dressed as if they have been homeless for quite some time, they certainly were not clean and did not have the luxuries we have. It was safe to say, I have no idea who these people are, which only meant one thing.

We're under attack.

Racing out of my room with my heart feeling like it could burst out of my chest at any moment, I head to Rick's room and grab the rifle from his closet, knowing that now is more than a good time to use it.
I stare at it in my hands, the thought of having to kill someone rattling me for a second.

"Ellie!" I hear Carol yell out to me with a concerned tone.
I head out and meet her half way down the stairs. "What's going on? I just looked, we're surrounded!" I exhale in a panic.

Judging by the look on her face, she already had a plan, "You have to stay here and keep Judith safe." She nods at me once before turning around quickly and heading for the front door, sliding her knife out of her belt. "You can't let them in, okay?" She says lastly, I nod at her before she's out the door, I rush to it quickly and lock it behind her.

I take a deep breath before making sure my gun is loaded, as heavy as it is in my arms, I can't put it down. I'm the only protection Judith has from those people out there.

Oh god. I'm the only protection Judith has from those people out there.

Half of our group is out trying to lure an enormous horde of infected away from the area, including Rick. It was just Judith and I in this house now, thankfully she's asleep upstairs and I didn't have to worry about keeping her occupied.

Hearing more gunshots regularly and screams from other people in Alexandria, I decide to head around the house and check everything's locked, constantly making sure no ones trying to break in. It wasn't long before I could hear something back at the front door, and I wasn't expecting anyone, someone's trying to get in.

From the living room, I creep carefully to the doorway between me and the front door, peeking around the corner, I see a shadow of someone outside and the sound of keys jingling. Shit.

"Okay." I exhale quietly to myself. I'm going to have to kill them.

Raising my rifle, I slowly head towards the person trying to open the door. I try to steady my breathing so my shot can be accurate.
A million voices screamed in my head to go back, to hide, to go find help, but I couldn't.
