「 chapter 29 」
_______________

Several days had passed since the group had arrived in Alexandria, I hadn't really made any new friends yet, mostly adults just kept trying to make conversation with me, I could see the sympathy on their face when I would tell them a small part of our journey here, it was just the usual boring small talk, but it did feel good to meet new people we could actually trust.

Rick and Michonne have been assigned a job of protection and to keep an eye on the community here, it was weird seeing them both in uniforms I'd seen soldiers from QZ zones wear. Diana told me she doesn't think I need a 'job', that I'm too young to worry about keeping the community intact, how I should go make friends with other kids and have fun, it just didn't seem right, I haven't had fun in a long time. There was some kind of party thing just a night ago, Diana held it at her house and by the time Rick managed to drag me there it was full of people I had never seen in my life, it was crowded and a little loud. Glasses of alcohol in everyone's hands and I didn't see another kid there my age until the end of the night, Rick tried to get me to go say hello, I told him I was too tired and didn't want to, he didn't force me, thank god. I was just too nervous  they'd hate me or something. As we left the party, Carol handed me a chocolate chip cookie, I haven't had one before and she insisted I tried, so I did.

Best thing I've ever eaten.

Nibbling on my slice of toast, I hear footsteps heading down the stairs behind me. I was sitting alone at the dining table in the middle of the room, I'd finally figured out how to use the toaster alone without any help, though my slices were a little burnt. It was a little cold this morning, I woke up with cold toes and a hungry stomach, I left my bedroom and went to the bathroom before coming downstairs to make food. I haven't seen anyone else walking around outside yet, maybe they were sleeping in, it was only seven thirty.

"Mornin'." Rick waltzes into the room, breaking the silence I had to myself for a half hour or so. "Hey," I reply, turning around in my chair to see him, he was in the uniform again, must be about to head out to do his job.

"You made yourself breakfast?" He steps towards the table beside me, investigating my plate of food.

"Yeah, I worked the toaster. Do you want me to make you some? It's a little burnt, but—"

"No, no, it's okay I'm gonna cook some bacon. You want some?" He quickly cuts me off, I smile a little when I realise my burnt toast had put him off, I didn't feel like making anymore anyway.

"I'm good." I reply smoothly.

Rick takes out the can and props it open, while he makes his own food I decide to clean up my own. I put the leftover burnt pieces in the trash and leave my dish in the sink, I'm not cleaning that shit up.
I head back upstairs to my room and change out of what I slept in, putting on a pair of jeans, a grey shirt and a blue hoodie, I slip my shoes and socks on before tying my hair back and out of my face. My hands pat over my pocket and I notice my knife was missing again, scanning the room I locate it on the sheets on my bed, just sticking out from my pillow I'd slept on. I slide it into my jeans pocket as I walk back downstairs, erupting the cold silence again.
