「 chapter 9 」
_______________

It's was afternoon, I was in the paddock with some other kids around my age, I was watching adults take out infected through the fence.
I kick a soccer ball against a fence as I listen to the others conversation, "Haha! That one's James." Mika, one of the smaller kids points at an infected.

"Why James?" Her sister asks, Lizzie. She was about a year or so older than Mika.
"The tag on his shirt, his name was James."

I stop the ball with my feet and wander towards the group, "What are you guys doing?" I ask, confused.

"They're naming some of the infected." Patrick answers me. He was older than me by a few years, really tall and a nerd, but he was still super nice so I talk to him.

I shoot him an odd look. Naming infected?

"Why are you naming infected?" I ask, there can't be a good explanation for this.

"Everyone deserves a name." Lizzie says, all the kids turning towards me.

"They aren't people, they're dead. They eat people." I snap at her.

"They're still people! Just... Different." She looks back at the corpses, sympathy in her eyes.

"That's fucking stupid." I say mutter, rolling my eyes turning away to go back to the soccer ball. Kids suck.

"Whatever." Lizzie finishes the argument, "Hey! Are you coming to story time tonight?" She spins around to Patrick with a grin on her face.

I spin around to see his reaction.

"Uh..." His eyes flicker to me a few times and I raise an eyebrows at him. "Yeah sure." He says back down to her.

"Cool! See you there!" Mika gives a wide grin before running off with the rest of the group, leaving Patrick and I alone.

He turns to me and I give him another look. "Really?" I ask, raising my eyebrows.

He rolls his eyes while smiling, "I go some times, alright?"

I smirk at his dorkiness. Of course he goes sometimes.

"You wouldn't dig it, it's for kids." He shakes his head, shrugging slightly.

"Uh-huh." I nod, still smirking.

He sighs, "Well, I'm going to head up now, see you around, youngster." He ruffles my head and walks away, following the smaller kids towards the building.
