Kathryn's POV

I stumble blindly through the seemingly endless corridor, seeking the sound of my mother's voice. It may be just an illusion that the Elites are using to finally capture me, but an effort in vain is still an effort.

I slump against the wall, my shoulders heaving as I catch my breath. My legs ache, signifying the dreaded fact that soon, my body will shut down.

Hot tears roll down my cheeks as I allow myself a few more moments of rest. Then I start up my journey, praying that my mother's voice doesn't fail me.

Suddenly I hear a voice, and my heart leaps. The words fade in and out, like a candle flickering and threatening to go out, but it is there.

"Kathryn, I love you. You may not ever hear this, but I truly and unforgivably love you. From the moment I first saw you, I knew that I couldn't let you go."

I recognize the voice instantly, and it brings a wave of heartache.

"Now I have one wish. Don't let me go."

"I won't."

The words come out as a whisper, and that's all I can manage. I hold my breath, praying that he may somehow hear it. Energy builds up inside me.

And then I see. I see the glass case he's being held in. It's dimly lit and small. Blood is smeared on the walls of it.

"Sebastian!" I scream frantically.

"Kathryn," he replies weakly.

I press my hands against the glass, looking in on him. Sebastian's clothes are colored a deep red from blood, and his eyes are closed.

"Kathryn, are we dead? Is this what they call heaven?"

I begin to cry. "No, no, no, you're not dead. I'm not dead either. I found you, Sebastian. I didn't let go."

A weak smile appears on his face. "I love you."

In the midst of my sobbing, I smile back even though he can't see it. "I love you too, Sebastian."

I savor the moment of peace the moment brings, even though we're still separated by the glass.

I found him.
