Kathryn's POV
"So," Tony says, appropriating a seat on the leather sectional. "Who is he?"
"Well, shoot, Tony. You should know," I say, mainly because I don't want to talk. I've already tried to separate myself from the group's hard twice, but Natasha keeps pulling me back in. Something about aunt intuition.
"Very funny, Baby Jetstream. Answers please." Natasha says.
I raise my eyebrow at her. "Jetstream? And I'll give you a hint. He is burdened with glorious purpose."
Nat mumbles, "Jetstream is what I called your mother."
Sam frowns, still very confused. "Who? What?"
"Out of your time, Sam. Yours and mine both," I say, sliding off the couch.
The Avengers have all been gaping in silence, maybe because they made a stupid mistake.
"So that's Reindeer Games? Little ol' Thor's brother, " Tony says, whistling.
"My dad, too. And he's been under the spell of something for years. Do you know anything that would do that?" I ask. The question is mainly targeted to Sebastian, who is staring out at the New York skyline with a vaguely pissed off expression.
"There's a cube thing. Agents weren't allowed near it, or even to touch it. Blue, wispy. A fun little toy for a sadistic murderer like Tom here," he answers, gesturing to the still-unconscious father of mine. So his pseudonym is Tom. Nice.
Clint looks scared and traumatized, a strange look for his typically nonchalant expression. "Blue? Tony, do you think..."
Tony nods, a grim expression on his face. "I mean, Thor took it to Asgard. Loki had access, saying he got out of the prison Thor rambled about. Abusing your wife is no unpunishable crime, even in space."
"Are we..." I struggle with the name of it, for the terrible stories attached to it were always frightening. "Are we discussing the Tesseract?"
The energy source that caused my father to leave my mother. She got sick, from what Grandmother says was heart brokenness. The way she described the memories to me still resounded in my heart, even though I knew deep down it was Thanos's fault.
Natasha nodded, her face solemn. My worst fears were confirmed. That's why my father left. He was never fully cured from the consuming power of the cube. The simple knowledge of this makes me nauseous, so I pull myself off the black leather couch and out to Tony's deck. I hear footsteps behind me, but I don't turn around.
"Hey." It's Sam.
"Hey," I answer. I'm tempted to dive off the tall structure, away from everything. It would be so much easier.
"What's wrong?" he asks.
I turn to face him, his deep brown eyes, adorable nose, and messy red just like Pepper's. "Everything is wrong. I should've stayed in Asgard, regardless of what my dad said to me in a letter. My dad is kind of a dirtbag."
Sam laughs. "Everyone tells me my dad was a player. I've never seen him that way, I guess because he married my mom before I was born. Sure, we've had rough times, but he always comes through for me."
I nod, leaning slightly over the railing. "What would you do if I fell off?"
He slides over to me, taking my hand. "I'd have to go and save you."
I smile slightly, breathing in deeply. I can hear the New York ambiance drawing me in. Wouldn't it be nice to drown in it? The stars are coming out, making beautiful patterns above me. I lean bacl farther, then let go of Sam's hand and slip off the deck toward the ground.
