Kalico: Thursday morning with Wallflower, Johnson Farm Gate

With some misgivings about the authenticity of Wallflower's version of "Turkey Hypnosis," I stood the way she had directed me earlier – heels together, toes apart, knees bent so I appeared bow-legged, backs of my wrists up against my ribs to form wings with my elbows out.

"This looks so silly. I wouldn't do it in broad daylight," I told her. "It's a good thing the sun isn't up yet. I thought you hypnotists were supposed to give some secret word that throws the person back into a trance instantly. Not that I was in a trance the first time."

"Yeah, sometimes we do that," Flower agreed. "I decided to do it this way because we're such good friends. I don't want you to think I would use secret signals to take advantage of you. This way you must make a special effort to trance, so there's no sneaking up on you with it. And the results are the same because you're hypnotized and I can still take advantage of you. "

"Well, I certainly appreciate the consideration," I said with a bit of sarcasm. "I guess that makes sense, especially since you are only pretending to hypnotize me, because this doesn't even nearly come close to being hypnosis. I'm just going along with it because I thought you might show me something I can use on that science project."

"Yeah! Yeah! I know! You were the one who asked me to hypnotize you, and now you're just going along with it so I won't feel bad. Never disrespect your hypnotist, young lady! We can have fun with it, but hypnosis is serious business. Disrespect the wrong hypnotist and you just might find yourself walking down the road to school naked," she laughed.

"I thought you were already going to try to do that," I giggled. "Make me walk down the road naked, all the way to school."

"You must understand that I can't make you do anything. This is a joint operation. A team effort between your conscious levels, your subconscious levels and myself. All I do is present an idea to your subconscious. Your conscious may not understand the message. The main task for your conscious level is to get itself distracted from what your subconscious is understanding. Right now, for instance, your conscious levels are convinced this is silly and ineffective. That's good. As long as you believe this, it's as good a distraction as any.

"Meanwhile, your subconscious levels can work with me in making a surprise for you later. As I said, I can't make you do anything. All I am doing is communicating an idea deep within your subconscious levels of thought. Later, when the time is right, your part of the task will be to decide to do it, without any more encouragement from me.

"When you came out the door this morning to meet me at this bench, you were thinking you might shed your clothes and join me in a naked stroll to school. You may think now that you might want to change your mind and keep your clothes on. And you might just do that, too – you may think you have changed your mind, that is, and you are certainly welcome to try to keep your clothes on.

"But most of the time, the hypnotized person ends up doing the assigned task. So, I expect that when the time comes, you will insist on walking all the way to school naked, even if I or someone else tries to talk you out of it. And you will do it, too. Naked all the way to school. Naked. Bare butt naked. What's more, you will enjoy it.

"Naked is such a cool word, isn't it? Let's talk about that for a few moments.

"I like to be naked whenever I can, in private. I almost never let other people see me naked, except maybe my mother and very, very close friends. You should be honored because, here I am naked with you on a dark and lonely road far out into the countryside. I think I would probably be very embarrassed about it, except that you and I are friends and teammates, so it's all right to be naked with you. All right for us to be naked together.
