Dubta Waqt

Sati sat there with innocent acceptance that her Baba will get better only if she went away with the person who had contacted him a few weeks ago.  She knew who he was...but may be Dost didn’t. His face had gone pale. And she felt hurt that he didn’t think she meant what she said. It was not his fault though… he didn’t know things which she knew. But baba was priority here thats all.

Rudra had lost his cool calling her names, selfish, greedy and an opportunist. He had said many more things and how he has always hated her existence. The man who had contacted Rudra had not mentioned much about himself but he had offered Rudra one thing that was his biggest weakness. His Dad, Romendra Pratap Singh.

Rudra was 20 years old when one night he heard the regular screaming match happening between his parents. His Dad was trying to say something…. But…

Romendra: Tum aisa soch bhi kaise sakti ho ke main…. Tumhari mati mari gayi hai. Main in sawalon ka jawab bhi dena zaruri nahi samajhta. Maine tumse jo puchha tum uska jawab do…. Kya main uss bachchi ko yaha la sakta hu?

Simran (Romendra’s wife and Rudra’s mom) : Agar tum use yaha leke aaye main Rudra aur apne aapko goli maar dungi. Aur yeh mat samajhna ke main pheeki dhamki de rahi hu… Yeh meri aur mere bete ki zindagi ka sawal hai… main iss baat pe apni rai kabhi kabhi nahi badalungi. Main tumhari kisi najayaz aulad ko apne ghar mein bardasht nahi karungi.

Romendra: Simran you know what? I am done with this relationship… agar Rudra nahi hota toh main kabka yeh ghar chhodke jaa chuka hota. Tumhari yeh roz roz ki shak karne ki aadat, tumhare yeh bekar ke jhagde. Tum apni aag mein khud hi jalo. Main apne farz se pichhe nahi hat sakta. Aur tumhe jo sochna hai tum soch sakti ho. Woh bachichi meri nahi hai, par uske maa ke jaane ke baad uski zimmedari meri hai. Aur main tumhe itna hi kahunga bas.

And Rudra started to walk away with all his painful past hammering in his mind. He, his Dad’s only child had not been enough for him  to stay back. He had lost his Dad for a child who was nobody to his Dad. He had been 20 years old and it's been 6 years. And Sati was that girl. His nemesis, his one enemy in the whole wide world.

Her friendship, her innocence, her pets and her concern for him, had it all  been just drama? She had been portraying the image of an innocent helpless girl just because she had wanted him to believe in her. And how did she manage so easily to trap him, just as her mother had trapped his Dad in her “friendship”.

But he was somehow feeling guilty that she had known about her conversation, she had known everything…. And yet she cared for his wound. She was acting of course.

By late night the next day…

Rudra was in his rooms when Diya knocked on his door….

Rudra: Come in…( Somewhere in the back of his mind he was waiting for Sati)

Diya: Dada, main ...main ander aau?

Rudra: Arey Diya?... Aaona sweety its ok. Kuchh chahiye tha aapko? (he kept his voice soft and low. He remembered Diya was Sati’s favourite, a sweet little girl with innocence and wisdom mingled in one).

Diya: Dada, yeh aapke ke liye hai. (And she brought a bag in front of her, and offered it to him).

Rudra: (noticed Diya seemed upset or stressed about something) Diya sab theek hai? Kya hai isme beta… ( the girl bowed her head down ) Mujhe Dada kehti ho toh mujhe nahi bataogi kya baat hai? Bolo kya hua?

Diya: Dada aap Sati di se isliye kal naraz huye kyunki woh yaha aapke baba ke ashram mein rehti hai? Woh aap kal jab unhe daat rahe the toh maine sun liya galati se. Main hide and seek ki den de rahi thi waha chhupke.

Rudra: Diya main… main iss bare mein baat nahi karna chahta please…

Diya: (started to move away) Aap hum sabse naraz ho kyunki hum aapke baba ke ashram mein rehne aaye hai?.. Humare paas agar koi aur hota jo humari care karta toh hum aise aapke baba ke paas nahi rehte Dada. Aap agar bologe toh hum sab yaha se chale jayenge. …. Sati Di ki tarah.

And Diya turned to go away… She was already upset about Sati and now she knew Rudra dada hated them all. It hurt her little heart….

Rudra was about to open the bag but stilled, his brain processing what Diya said again…. Surely he has heard it wrong…. Surely she wouldn’t.

Satiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
