Over the course of the next two weeks I repeated the same cycle. Eat, study, shower, sleep. I was exhausted from reading the same material over and over again but finals week was a breeze. I didn't exactly ace all my tests but I was close.

My dad had been calling me all week to see how I did in my classes and to talk about graduation, which was in two days. He had flown in last night and was staying in a hotel near my apartment.

Although he was here for my graduation he also had business in the city so a graduation dinner or luncheon was out of the question. This rarely ever happened, I was a huge daddy's girl and he swore he would make it up to me but deep down I was glad. I didn't know how to tell him I was going to a hood party and now I wouldn't have to.

"Toralei snap out of it girl. Finish getting ready."

"I have to get ready to sit in a car and drive around the hood."

"Yes, trust me."
Today I was going to Ashley's cousin's house for lunch and to get a 'tour' of the area the party would be in. All of this was extremely extra and over the top but Ashley wanted me to be 'prepared'.

The drive down the hill was terrible, we were in traffic for almost an hour before Ashley started to recognize her old neighborhood.

"You like it so far?"

"I've been here for 1 second, give me a minute."

"You ever had a kool aid pickle?"

"A what?"

"Girl, pull over at that liquor store."
I pulled into the parking lot of the corner store. I was filled with men that stared us down even before we stepped out the car.
"Lock the doors behind yourself."

We stepped out the car then I locked the doors and followed Ash in the store.

"Ight I'm gone fuck with you."
I looked around the store for the voice I just heard

"Girl if you look too hard they're going to approach you."
I couldn't help but laugh, Ashley was hilarious

We purchased hot mamas and kool aid packets. Ashley attempted to teach me how to eat it but it was self explanatory.

"You like it?"

"No, not really."
I tossed the entire pickle in the trash along with the packet.

"Maybe it's the flavor you got. You might like the pickle with the hot chips instead, that's my favorite."

"Y'all eat pickles with everything?"

"Y'all? Girl stop acting boujee."

I rolled my eyes and headed back to the car. I didn't mean it how she perceived it and I wasn't trying to act boujee, I was being myself.

Once she got back in the car we were off to another spot that 'I just had to see'. This time we ended up at her cousins house, the house the party would be thrown at.

"This is Tori. Tori this is my cousin, Devon."

"Nice to meet you."

"You too. Make yourself comfortable, I'll be right back."

Ashley walked right in the house before pulling me in. Her cousin walked outside to a car's passenger window.

"I left my phone."
I stepped outside and walked back to the car to retrieve my phone. Devon walked passed me just as I shut my door. The car he just left honked causing me to look at it.

"Toralei!"
I looked at Ashley then back to the car, the man who was driving looked so familiar. He looked like Rakim but then he didn't. I took a few steps towards the car before I felt Ashley grab my hand.
"What are you doing?"

Just as she spoke the car took off.
"I thought I knew him."

"Girl you don't know anyone around here, come in the house."

For the rest on the day my mind was thrown off. I couldn't stop thinking about Rakim and who I seen in that car. If only I heard his voice then I would've known. He was Rakim's skin color but his hair was long and he had tattoos all over himself and he was wearing glasses. The Rakim I knew only had one tattoo and kept his hair short and didn't wear glasses.

"You good?"
Devon asked me after seeing me drift off into space from time to time for the last few hours

"That guy in that car, who was he?"

"Rock? Oh that's my nigga."

"Is he going to be at the party?"

"He wouldn't miss it."

I nodded before thanking him and going back to my thoughts. That couldn't be Rakim and I was tripping. Ashley was right, I didn't know anyone from over here.
