“Hey Beautiful,” Luke said leaning against the car. Michelle was dressed in a red sweater dress and brown knee high boots with her hair pinned to one side of her face. “Hey Luke,” she said standing in front of him. “You look extra nice,” he said with a wink. “You’re bluffing,” she said rolling her eyes. “You know, I wonder when your dad is gonna stop looking at me that way when I pick you up,” Luke said hinting towards the door. Michelle groaned, “Ugh he’s just protective. Just a little.” “Well c’mon, let’s go!” he said opening the car door for her. She ducked into the passenger seat and waited until he sat down into the driver’s to say, “Is this a date?” He smiled, “I think we’ve been on many of those.” “Oh really? Like when?” Michelle asked. “When I asked you over for dinner, or when I took you out to that fancy Italian restaurant or even when we went to that jazz party downtown in Rockville,” he said answering smartly. “I don’t ever re-call you asking ‘Would you like to go on date?’ though,” she said picking at him. “Well I don’t ever re-call you wanting it to be a date,” Luke said teasing her. “Well it’d be nice to have a reason to hang out with you sometimes,” she snickered. “What? I’m not good enough for you?” he said tapping on the steering wheel looking over at her. “Of course not!” she mimicked his dramatic-ness, “I’m just saying, what do I tell my friends when I go out with you? That I’m just hanging around with my friend?” “So I’m ‘just a friend’ to you?” he asked with a smirk. “I don’t know, you tell me,” she said leaning one arm on the arm rest. Luke rested his arm on the arm rest also when replied saying, “Well what would you like me to tell you?” She stared at the window, “Whatever you want to tell me.”
There was silence after that, but subtly touch her hand and very slowly intertwined their fingers together- it gave her all the answers.
The rest of the drive there was this soft rock song playing in the background and there was no more talking, just the occasional finger brush. It was this nerve rushing feeling that went through both their bodies at a single touch.
Relief came when he pulled up into the parking lot of a music and band café shop. “This is nice,” Michelle said locking arms with Luke. He told the greeter a table for two and she walked them to an outside seating with strings of lights dangling over their heads. A aspiring band was singing a rock song on stage. When he took off his coat a strong scent of Axe filled her nostrils. Michelle caught herself looking at him with starry eyes and he smiled because he’d noticed it too. “What? Do I have a piece of hair sticking up?” he said combing through his hair. “No not at,” she composed herself, “You look perfect.” His eyes widened and then he gushed with this big smile that spread across his face. “What? Hasn’t anyone else tell you that before?” she asked hiding her blushing face behind a menu. He composed himself also and said, “Not anyone I really had an interest in though.”
The two got through with dinner without any other awkward moments and Michelle was very happy about that. Tonight was growing on a perfect point and she didn’t want to ruin it- it was the same thing Luke was thinking.
“You got the keys?” Luke asked standing close to Michelle at her door. She searched her purse and pockets and sighed, “I forgot it.” His lips turned up into a smile. “I can’t just call my parents either because they’re asleep now,” she said. Luke smiled and said, “What if I just climbed up and helped you get to your room?” “Aw would you?” she said with a blush. “Course I would,” he winked.
That smile and that wink gave her butterflies and she knew she was falling fast for him- but just when would he make things official? She didn’t know, she could only hope it was soon. Luke began to climb the side of the brick house, holding onto vines that had grown from the greenery around the old thing. “Are you okay?” she asked when he grunted. “Yeah I’m fine,” he said swinging himself onto part of the roof above the living room. “That window right there leads into my bedroom, just come down stairs and unlock the door for me. He nodded and did as he was told. Soon enough the front door opened with Luke looking proud of himself. “My hero,” she said with a sigh. He chuckled and said, “C’mon in lady.” She shut the door behind her, leading Luke quietly into the kitchen. “Do you want something to drink?” she asked sitting her bag down on the table. “No I should probably be going home now, it’s 11 and my mom will be wondering where I took you,” he said. “Haha! She wouldn’t even be worried about where you were?” she asked. He shook his head, “I’m 18. I’m a big boy that can take care of myself.” “You don’t give your mama enough credit,” she said. “She’s got nothing to be worried about,” he said about to open the front door but then he stopped himself. “Michelle, I had a really nice time tonight,” he said. “Thanks me too. Dinner was nice,” she said shoving her hands into her pockets. “No I mean if tonight was a date- it was really great,” Luke said cueing her in. She bit her lip thinking she was glad it was dark, or else he would have seen her blush red. Michelle simply nodded. “Goodnight,” he said kissing her on the forehead. She was about to let him walk away but then she pulled him back saying, “No if you’re gonna kiss me- do it the right way.” Luke smiled and bent down to kiss her quickly on the lips and then said, “Better?” “Much,” she laughed. “Alright now, for real though- Bye,” he said shutting the door gently behind him as she waved goodbye.
