“So I see you skipped out on school today?” Luke said over the phone. Michelle let out a groan, “I did not skip school! I was sick.” “Sure,” he chuckled. “No for real Luke, it’s not even funny,” she got mad at him. “Alright I’m sorry,” he said slightly laughing, “So do you want me to come and cook you chicken noodle soup?” “No,” she said shaking her head, “My mom has that covered.” “Alright well I’m going to let you go then,” he said about to hang up, “Get better!” “I’ll try,” she said smiling, “Bye.”
When she hung up, the phone her mom called from downstairs saying, “MICHELLE you have a friend here!” “OKAY send them up!” she yelled back. There was a knock at her door and she said, “Come in.” “Hey Michelle,” she said. Michelle barely rolled her eyes, “What are you doing here?” Cassidy clicked her tongue, “Listen I’m just trying to be a good friend. Don’t get snappy.” “Well thanks for coming,” she roughly said. “You’re welcome,” she said sitting down on her bed. The silence was awkward between the two so she started first. “So if you don’t talk to me at school anymore how come you made a visit?” Cassidy rolled her eyes, “Why do you look at me that way?” “What way?” she asked. “Like that! Like I’m your enemy, I’m not! Just because Luke says stuff…” “And everything that Luke said was true- was it not?” Michelle argued. “Whatever,” Cassidy cut off, “He had problems with me. That’s between me and him- not you! I just want to be your friend!” “I don’t need you to be my friend. I’m not desperate for friends. I don’t need a bunch of popularity attention seekers chasing me down for news on their ex-boyfriend,” Michelle snapped.
“Hey,” Abby stuck her head in through the door. “I was just leaving,” Cassidy got up and out. “What was that about?” Abby asked once Cassidy left the room. “I don’t know what her problem is, you ask me,” she shrugged. “Anyways Luke told me you were sick and demanded that I bring you chicken noodle soup,” Abby handed her a brown paper bag. “Aww thanks!” she said taking the bag and looking in it. “He made it?” “No,” Abby shook her head, “It’s Panera.” “Alright so what else you got?” Michelle asked. “Well I brought Mean Girls,” Abby said smugly smiling. “Yes!” she exclaimed. “And I also brought 22 Jump Street.” “I love you Abby!” Michelle hugged her. “Oh,” Abby said reaching into her bag, “And a box of Oreos.” Michelle smirked. “I stole them from JJ,” she smirked back.
“Aye give me some of that,” Abby took a spoonful of the chicken while watching 22 Jump Street. “Dude I could have like ebola or something and you just ate my food,” Michelle joked. “Well if you die I die so it’s gonna happen either way,” Abby shrugged. “You’re a true sister,” she took a bite out of the cookie Abby was holding. “Thanks?” she raised her eyebrow.
“We what are you doing to my face?” Michelle shook her head. “I’m doing your eyeliner so shut up,” she laughed hard. “It looks like a truck ran over my face. Girl! Do you know what you’re doing?!” Michelle laughed. “Keep talking and I might accidentally poke your eye out!” Abby threatened which was followed by a belly full of laughs from both girls.
The entire night, the girls found things to do between watching movies, to doing each-others makeup (in a horrid/hilarious way), to binge eating cookies and even dying both their hair red. “You do realize I already have naturally red hair right?” Abby asked while taking off the foil. “Yeah but I don’t so we might as well twin,” Michelle said doing the same. “Yeah but your hair is gonna turn out velvet red and mine is gonna be orange!” Abby complained. “Then I’ll pay for salon bill to become a blonde,” Michelle promised. Abby’s ears perked up, “Deal.”
Now sitting in the kitchen eating a bowl of lucky charms, the two girls sat in the kitchen at 3 in the morning with their pajamas and braids in their hair. “So how about Luke? You guys are dating?” Abby asked. Michelle nodded, “Yes I think. Yeah we are.” Abby’s feelings got killed when she answered that- but she knew the answer anyways. “That’s great,” she nodded. Michelle cleared her throat, “Is it weird that you share the same ex-boyfriend as a bunch of other girls at school?... and now me?” Abby shrugged, “Not really. I mean I was basically his second girlfriend so it’s not like he slept with everyone then.” Michelle bit her lip, “Are you mad?” Tiredness got the best of Abby because she said, “Yeah I kinda am.” “Why?” Michelle asked.
“Well for one, our relationship ended because various reasons. He was so focused on football and I was chasing my grades down- we didn’t have time for a committed relationship. And so we broke up, next week to find that he hooked up some girl and now they were dating. At the time that girl was Kelly, but she long graduated from our school. Then after a few more girls he came back to me saying he was sorry and I believed him so we started again. With the relationship to end because of another girl named Christina. Then he came back to me after they broke up because she cheated on him. Each time it was like I was his rebound girl and I got tired of it, I mean I was 16! I had a lot of other things to worry about over him. So when he got with this girl Andrea, and they broke up, he wanted me back but I held my ground and said I wouldn’t have that anymore. Either he was gonna stay with me or was gonna live without me. So when he started dating Tiffany… well things became rough between me and him. Trust me when I say I hated him for a long period of time, things have definitely changed since then,” Abby said stirring her spoon around in the milk.
“How?” Michelle asked. Abby smiled, “Well one day he came up to me and said sorry. It was a clean slate kind of sorry- the one where you know the person meant it without them repeating themselves. And well I forgave him and from then on we’ve been best friends.” “That’s good,” Michelle smiled drinking up her milk. Abby ruffled with her messy hair, “But ugh! He’s so stupid!” She laughed, “Why?” “Because he always falls for girls who he knows are going to hurt him,” Abby explained. Michelle’s expression changed- did she mean her?“Every time he gets into a relationship he ends up screwing it over and he comes back to me every time. Always reminding me of how it used to be…” Abby trailed off, “How I wish he knew how it used to be.”
Michelle gave an awkward cough and said, “Well. If it could, would you want it to be the way it was back when you two were dating?” Abby shrugged, “Maybe not. I’m not sure anymore… the past hurt too much but it also helped me a lot. I just hope this time he found the right girl.” Michelle smiled, but still felt weird. Maybe… Abby still liked Luke, and here she was dating him! “Can I ask you a question?” Michelle asked Abby. “Yeah sure,” she answered. “What makes you mad at him?” Michelle asked. Abby said, “Simple. The things that are the simplest and that will help him the most he pushes away. The things that will hurt him he loves the most.”
