Hoshi's POV:

I stared blankly at the wall of the orphanage room, the right side of my face aching from the punch the man gave me earlier. My seven-year-old self had unknowingly spoken out, protesting to the adults about how these living conditions weren't fair. That resulted in the bruise that was slowly forming on my face but I couldn't say I regretted it. A certain black-haired male walked in, his eyes settling on me. The same very eyes widened before he rushed to me, touching the aching spot gingerly.

"Jesus, Hoshi. What have you done now?"

The feelings that I have managed to push down rose up and I sniffled as my green eyes filled with tears.

"Ruki-kun! I didn't mean to! I just didn't want anyone else to live like this!" I wailed.

He sighed, pulling me into his embrace as he stroked my red, slightly matted hair softly.

"You know you have to be careful, don't you Hoshi? We've seen what the adults have done to people who have defied them, you're lucky to even make it out alive."

I nodded, using the back of my hands to wipe the tears away as we both pulled away. He knocked my head lightly with his fist, giving me a small smile.

"Now, there's no need to cry. There's something I need to discuss with you once the others come-"

The door slammed open to reveal a blonde, a brunette, and a tealette, all of their eyes trained on us.

"Hoshi!"

The brunette rushed to me, quickly pushing Ruki to the side and grabbed my face gently, looking at the bruise.

"I'm fine, Bear. Let it go." I whined.

"Are you sure you're okay?" the blonde asked, left eye shadowed with concern.

"I already said I was fine, Kou-kun."

"As...long as...you're fine..."

"Thank you for your concern Azusa-kun. Now, Ruki, what was it you wanted to discuss?"

The nine-year-old boy looked at each of us in the eye before taking a deep breath.

"Let's escape tonight."

Each of our eyes widened as the words flew out of his mouth, doubt written all over our faces.

"Are you crazy?!" I whispered, looking around.

"I know it sounds crazy but I have a plan. When the adults are asleep tonight, we escape through the sewers before running straight through the forest. As long as no one stops, we have a chance of getting away!"

"I'm in," Kou said quietly.

"Me too," Azusa said.

"Anything to get out of this place," Bear said.

I was a bit stunned at how easily they agreed but the determination written on their face told me how desperately they wanted out. I closed my eyes, unconsciously rubbing my face with my hand.

"Fine."

We all gave each other a smile, pulling into a group hug.

"Our plan starts at midnight," Ruki said.

-A few hours later-

I woke up to light shaking and Ruki's grey eyes stared down at me, sparkling with delight and fear.

"It's time."

I nodded, quickly getting out of bed and putting on some warm clothes, not bothering to bring anything with me. Kou, Yuma, and Azusa were already waiting outside, their legs jittering in fear.

"Follow me," Ruki whispered, leading us down the hallway.

We ran through as silently as we could before he stopped us, signaling to a manhole ahead of us.

"Through there."

Kou stood frozen in fear but I grabbed his hand, already knowing he has bad experiences with stuff that reminded him of his past.

"You'll be fine, Kou-kun. We're here for you."

He shook his head before nodding and following Yuma down the manhole. I looked around one last time before jumping in, Bear easily catching me. I heard shouts and everyone's eyes widened.

"We need to hurry!" Ruki hissed, quickly running down the tunnel.

I ignored the putrid smell surrounding me, holding Azusa's hand as I dragged him through. A light finally filled the tunnel and we reached a clearing, a forest to be exact.

"Come on!"

We all ran through the trees, shouts in the distance growing closer by the second. My lungs burned, telling me to stop but I ignored the pain, following behind my four friends as fast as I could. I heard a manly shout right behind me and a boom rung through the night air. Azusa, who was in front of me, collapsed, blood pooling around him.

"NO!" I yelled.

Everyone stopped for a second but that's all the time the adults needed. Two more shots sounded and Kou and Bear were the next to go down.

"STOP!" I begged, tears streaming down my face.

The old man behind me aimed his gun at Ruki but I ran, standing in the bullets way. It hit me directly in the chest, missing my heart by a few inches. I gasped, the blooming, burning pain easily taking over my senses as I collapsed into Ruki's arms.

"You idiot! You weren't supposed to shoot the girl!"

A younger man took the gun and aimed it at Ruki, successfully shooting him in the leg. The boy in front of me yelped and went down, my head on his chest.

"Heh, leave them out here for the wolves."

All the people from the orphanage disappeared, leaving us for dead. I looked at the three boys behind me, none of them moving. I moved my gaze to Ruki, his face scrunched up in pain.

"Ruki-kun..." I said, touching his cheek softly.

"Shh, don't talk," he said, wiping the blood off the side of my chin.

"I love you, Ruki."

I gave him a tearful smile but our moment was cut off by a bright light, instantly bringing us and the boys into a colorful room, a hooded figure standing in front of us. His long white hair cascaded down the front of his body, his golden eyes shining brightly. I saw fangs peeking out of his mouth as he gave us a smile, something suspicious hiding behind it.

"Do you want your brothers and sister to live again?" he said, his deep voice resonating through the room.

Ruki didn't even hesitate.

"Yes! Please save them!"

"Very well. In exchange, I will become your 'father' and you must obey my every word. You will also become the same race as I am, vampires and you will take on the last name, 'Mukami'. Will that be okay?"

"Anything is fine! Please...."

The tall man chuckled before extending his hand.

"My name is Karlheinz. A pleasure to meet you, Ruki Mukami."

Ruki took his hand and shook his hand, a soft yellow light enveloping us.

"I will see you all very soon," Karlheinz said.

I felt the warm light and my eyes became heavy, sleep coming over me.
