Tina turned at the voice.
A shock of white hair and one electric blue eye greeted her.
Gellert Grindelwald.
“Tell me what you’re doing here. And with Queenie Goldstein, of all people,” he purred.
Queenie stepped forward. “Nothing.” She sent a message to Tina. Give me time. I might be able to do something exploded in Tina’s head. Tina shot an almost imperceptible nod back.
“What do you want?” Tina asked, lacing the question with venom.
Grindelwald smirked. “She enjoys pretending she’s bigger, better, than she is, interesting,” he said. Tina felt her cheeks burning.
“What do you want?” Tina repeated.
“Oh, I’m checking up on my castle.”
“Stop dodging the question. And weren’t you supposed to be in Prague?” Mr Brighton added.
“Maybe.” Suddenly, Grindelwald had six wands pointed at his head. He raised his hands in mock defeat. “Fine. My handy friend Kasey told me of your-” he pointed at Queenie, who was furrowing her brow in concentration, “betrayal. So I came. I knew you’d turn back to your sister’s side.” Queenie made no move to reply, she didn’t even look up. Strange.
“And now what?” Pixie asked, her hair turning a different colour every second..
“You should hand over the wands.”
“Why should we?” Theseus said.
“Because I’ll kidnap or kill every single one of you.” Grindelwald remarked, brushing snow off his coat. He said it as if it wasn’t a big deal.
“You won’t get a chance to!” Pixie shouted, shooting a spell at Grindelwald, a bolt of pure white light. She was hoping to catch him off guard-
But he deflected it easily. Pixie’s face fell, shame creeping up her neck. Tina elbowed her and mouthed a lightning-quick it’s okay.
“You are so naïve, little girl. Did you actually think you could do anything?” Grindelwald said, sneering.
“You’ll never get to the wands,” Tina said, narrowing her eyes. Keep arguing with us, she willed. Though she didn’t know what Queenie was doing, she trusted that something would happen.
“Do you think so?”
“Yes.”
“Then why haven’t you tried to attack me? Not including the rainbow girl.” There was no response. “So you’re planning something, I see. Since I have no choice, I’ll have to-” A jet of blue fire rocketed to the aurors, who deflected it. They had formed a tight u-shape, shielding Queenie and Newt. Tina looked back. Queenie was still standing in the same spot. She looked back. Grindelwald was standing, twirling his wand in his hand, seeming to not pay attention. The aurors, confused, did the same, except they kept their shields up.
“It seems we’ve come to an impasse,” Grindelwald said.
“I’d expect you to make a move,” Mr Ramos said.
“I’d expect you to make a move, tiny hummingbird.” Mr Ramos’s face contorted for a second and turned back to stony. This is exhausting, Tina thought. “And you, Theseus Scamander. You’re only an auror because your coward parents wanted you to be one. Then again, you’ve done a good job of it, considering the fact that you’re still alive. Seems you’ve gone down the same road as your parents, anyway.” The tips of Theseus’s ears turned pink. A bolt of realization struck Tina.
“Don’t listen to him! He’s distracting us and then he’ll strike when we’re off-guard!” she exclaimed. Little bolts struck each of the aurors. When will this thing you’re planning happen? Tina thought, hoping Queenie would hear. Nothing back.
We’re not going to die, Tina thought. Hoped.
“You all are exhausting,” Grindelwald said. So are you, Tina retorted in her head. “Just turn over the wands, and you’ll leave unscathed.”
“Never!” Queenie yelled.
Then she screamed. It was earsplitting, piercing, the kind that couldn’t be real, but was. And then a jet of- of something shot out of the blond, bobbed lady. The air rippled, and somehow it knocked Grindelwald off the roof. The aurors took that moment to stuff all the wands into Mr Brighton’s coat and his hand, and he apparated the heck out of there. Ten seconds later, he was back, wandless except for his own. The aurors gave a collective sigh of relief. Tina looked backwards. Newt was comforting the shaking Queenie as far away from the aurors as possible.
What was that? Tina made a mental note to ask Queenie. There were a lot of things she needed to ask and tell her sister.
But Grindelwald wasn’t gone, not by a long shot. He came floating back up, coat rippling in the wind. At least the wands were safe.
The aurors braced themselves, gripping their wands with white knuckles. And they were right to expect something, as six individual bolts of fiery orange light shot towards the aurors. Confringo. The blasting curse. The people on the outside of the auror u-shape -Pixie and Mr Ramos- created a huge shield to cover the group, while the others shot as many spells as they knew (which was a lot) to the dark wizard. Newt and Queenie huddled behind them under another shield. Grindelwald levitated chunks of ice and snow and tossed them toward the aurors. Snow showered over the shield. It was a miracle it was still up, with it being hit by an immense amount of force.
But that didn’t last. The shield disappeared as one of Grindelwald’s oversized snowballs hit it extra hard. The aurors dived to the floor, shielding their heads as chunks of ice and powdery snow rained over their heads, a miniature snowstorm. It got in Tina’s boots, down her coat, everywhere. The snow and ice covered the roof, making it slipperier than it already was. She gasped for breath, as a large chunk of ice had hit her in the back. But she thought for a second, then conferred with the other aurors who were hunched beside her. They nodded, and in a split second, they were up. The plan was simple, but it would work. Sometimes simple plans worked better than complicated, convoluted ones. They made the same formation as before. Grindelwald was still floating.
“Do you really think you can stop me? You’re weak, you can barely get up. Might as well stop now, and I’ll leave you unharmed.” The aurors made no move. “I guess I have no choice. You’ve resisted all my other attacks, but not this one- Avada Kedavra!” At that moment, the aurors each sent a disarming charm as the green bullet of death was rocketing towards them. The aurors leapt backwards, to about where Newt and Queenie were. Grindelwald’s spell hit the ground but rocketed outwards, a green wave almost reaching the aurors. That’s how he was planning on taking them all out, he must have changed the spell somehow. Tina looked up once the wave had disappeared. She wasn’t taking any chances, she didn’t want to die. She rushed to the edge of the roof, sliding over the frozen surface, almost toppling over the edge. Looking down, she saw Grindelwald hanging from a windowsill about eight meters down. And then she spied a wand lying helpless in the snow. Without a second thought, she leapt off the roof. Wings sprouted on her back, and she dived, hurtling towards the ground. Right before she crashed into the ground, she faced upwards, flapping her wings, and she landed on the ground unharmed. That spell was one of her specialities, and she had used it many times at school to escape bullies. She picked up the wand and examined it. The Elder Wand. Possibly the most dangerous wand in existence. She had read The Tales of Beedle the Bard, it was one of her favourite books, but it was unclear who owned the wand now. But that didn’t matter, what did was taking it so Grindelwald couldn’t use it. She tucked it in her slim wand pocket in her coat. The air whooshed past her wings as she jetted back up. But something was off. Where was Grindelwald? She turned around, and Grindelwald was floating an arm’s length away from her.
“How?” was all Tina could muster.
“Wandless magic, darling,” Grindelwald replied. Tina cursed in her head. I should have anticipated that.
“So now what?”
“Right now, ten of my highly skilled acolytes are on their way up to the roof. They have no qualms about killing. And if I recall correctly, ten is greater than four.”
“They’re prepared. We did beat you all in the Ministry.”
“Yet you still have no idea why we were there, do you? You were too caught up in your silly little drama with Mr Tolliver to find out.”
“That’s not important. We’ve captured a good amount of your acolytes, and we’ll soon find the answer.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m never sure, only mostly convinced. It keeps me running.”
Grindelwald gave a satisfied nod. “Smart. Now give me my wand.” Tina replied by shooting the blasting curse at him multiple times. Grindelwald did his best to dodge the blasts, but it was difficult without the use of his wand. The corner of his coat got singed, as did the sleeve. Grindelwald was skilled in wandless magic, but his knowledge had limits, and he had to focus on flying while doing everything else. He managed to send a couple of jets of wind in Tina’s direction, which knocked her around a bit. But Tina easily swerved and dived, a ballerina in the air, unlike her on the ground. She shot curse after curse after the infamous dark wizard, him only blocking and dodging, not returning. It gave Tina a little rush of satisfaction that, even if he was powerful, she was beating him. It was a very one-sided battle, though.
Once he was weakened to the point where he had trouble flying, Tina grabbed a pair of cuffs from her pocket (you never knew when they’d be helpful) and tossed them in Grindelwald’s direction. The cuffs flew on their own accord and slapped themselves on Grindelwald’s wrists in the blink of an eye.
Grindelwald fell. Tina flew down and secured a fistful of his coat. And then she flew back to the roof, a limp Grindelwald dangling below. Grindelwald could do nothing but glare.
Tina was elated that she’d caught Grindelwald, but the comment he made about his acolytes sent jitters through her body.
She slowly touched down on the roof-
And was met by a horrifying scene.
