(Chapter 24)
"Let It Die"Tuesday, March 17
3:00pm"Why are we here again?" Darren asked Jillian outside the prison.
"I found a birthday card Cameron gave me last year. The handwriting is different than the Admirer notes," she explained.
"How are you sure?"
"Because I know!"
"Did you compare them?"
"I don't have them anymore, I had to hand them over to the police."
"Then maybe-"
"No. I know they're different. He's giving me answers either way."
~Jillian, again, sat alone in the visiting room waiting.
"Back again?" Cameron sat down across from her.
"What the fuck is this?" She threw the card at him.
"Oh, I remember this. What about it?"
"The handwriting! You didn't write those Admirer notes, did you?"
Cameron rolled his eyes.
"Jillian... come on. I masked my handwriting. You didn't think I wouldn't write differently so you wouldn't know?""You... you did write them then."
"Who else would've?"
"You said someone was helping you."
"He only helped me break into your house that night. Everything else was me."
"Why is he still stalking me?"
"I made a call."
"What?"
"I made a phone call to him. He shouldn't be following you around anymore."
"You... helped me?"
"Not to help you. He has no business doing what he's doing. You shouldn't have to deal with him. I told him to back off or I'll tell you who he is."
"You'd tell me who he is?"
"Only if he bothers you again."
"I... thank you."
"Mm. Hopefully you won't have to come here again."
"I..."
"What?"
"Nothing... just... for the first time in a very long time I feel like I'm looking at my friend again."
"Don't start feeling sorry for me now," he snapped at her.
"I'm not! You were my friend my whole life. And... I'm sorry this happened."
"... So am I."
"Okay..."
"Jillian?"
"Yeah?"
"I hope you're happy."
"I am. Bye, Cameron."
~"How'd it go?" Darren asked her when she came back out.
"... I don't know."
"What happened?"
"He did write the notes, he just masked his handwriting. But he still won't tell me who was helping him break into my house."
"But..."
Jillian filled him in on the last of their conversation
"Wait... what?"
"What?"
"This... doesn't make sense. Why would he suddenly be so calm and cooperative and sympathetic?"
"What do you mean?"
"He's never shown any remorse until today. After he claimed he called his friend. And after seeing you again."
"What are you saying?"
"Jillian... something really isn't adding up here."
"Darren, just relax. It's done. It's taken care of."
"Alright. I guess so."
"I'm still on guard too, but it's going to be okay now."
"I hope so."
