Lisa stood in her room, looking at the cast on her leg. It was so ugly. She was used to wearing cute shoes, and at worse, her clunky ice skates. Now, she had this despicable hunk of papermache attached to her leg. It was so ugly. Her dad had made a joke about getting it signed and she had burst into tears. This wasn't a fun game. The longer her leg took to heal, the longer she was out of the rink and she wasn't going to be able to make it to state if she wasn't able to skate.
"Lisa, honey?" her mom called from downstairs. "Benny is here to see you!" Lisa felt her heart rate quicken in her chest. She still hadn't told Benny about how she had gotten injured in the first place. He had asked her over and over again if he had gone too fast, if he had tripped her, if he had done something to make her slam into that wall and hurt herself. She always said no, because he hadn't really done anything. Well...he had. He had fallen in love with her and she didn't know what to do about it.
Lisa loved Dean. She knew she loved Dean. She always smiled when she thought about him, and he was comfortable. She had been so happy to find her soulmate, but the older they got, the more platonic their relationship felt. When she first got partnered with Benny, she wanted to call Dean and tell him that she had met a cute ice skater. She wanted to see him happy. But she wanted to see him happy with someone that wasn't her.
"Hey, Lis," Benny said as he walked into the room.
"Hi," she said. He looked down at her leg. "Don't stare too long, you know they say it's rude," she teased. Benny smiled slightly and then looked back up at her. She almost regretted telling him not to stare. It was better for him to look at her leg instead of her eyes.
"You're gonna heal in no time, Lisa. Don't worry," Benny said with a smile. Lisa nodded and looked at her phone. Dean was texting her. She flipped her phone over so it was face down.
"Yeah, I sure hope so," Lisa said, sitting down on the bed. Benny crossed the room and sat down beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. She leaned into him unintentionally, allowing herself to enjoy the sound of his heartbeat in her ear.
"Coach partnered me up with one of the new girls temporarily. I wish he hadn't, since you'll be coming back soon, but oh well. I'll still see you at school..." Benny started.
"No you won't," Lisa said quickly. She had been dreading this moment. She knew Benny would be paired up with someone else and their only connection left would be school. Well, Lisa was going to take care of that too. If Benny was around, she wouldn't ever be able to be good to Dean. He deserved that, after everything he had done for her.
"What do you mean? Why not?" Benny asked. He smelled nice, like woodsmoke and jasmine.
"I'm transferring schools. I'm going to Lawrence High School, where Dean goes," Lisa said. Benny didn't say anything.
"Lisa?" he asked gently after a couple of minutes of silence. She took a deep breath of his scent and then forced herself to pull away from his arms.
"Yes?" she asked.
"Do you love Dean?"
"Of course I do," she said quickly. And she did. She loved Dean.
"Are you in love with Dean?" he asked. Lisa couldn't force herself to look into his eyes and lie to his face. She looked down at the floor and nodded, despite the tears that were filling her eyes and falling, each one saying no, no, no as they hit the bedspread. "Lisa, don't lie to me."
"He's my soulmate..." she started.
"And that doesn't mean anything. Just because someone's soul is connected to yours doesn't mean it has to be romantic, Lisa. Don't do this if you're only doing it for his sake. You deserve to be ha..." Benny started. He was cut off by Lisa's lips. She pushed her lips forward into his, attempting to move closer but was stopped by her stupid cast. Luckily, Benny did the moving for her, pulling her closer. One of his hands was on her lower back, the other on the side of her neck. He didn't get handsy, which Lisa appreciated. He didn't try to shove his tongue into her mouth either. He was soft, and gentle. Lisa melted into the kiss.
