Hailey's POV
I woke up in the early morning. I couldn't really get back to sleep, so I just layed there, staring vacantly at my door: things got really messed up. It wasn't my fault that Cameron kissed Laela, and it wasn't my fault that I got kissed by Noah, but things sure turned out impossibly horrible for me. I could have had a loving, stable relationship with Cameron, but what did I have now? Nothing! Not one close friend, not one person to talk to, and most importantly, I didn't have the one person I cared about the most. I lost him, and this time it was forever.
"Stop it, Hailey." Emily tried calming me down as we arrived at the school gate. "As long as he hasn't replaced you, you still stand a chance."
I froze. "Too late."
"What do you mean?"
When I didn't respond, Emily followed my gaze until she found what I was looking at. Cameron and Lexi, arms wrapped around each other, kissing passionately: My worst fear has come true. Through the corner of my eye, I saw Emily's confused face. Why was she still surprised? Everyone knew it was going to happen eventually, Lexi was only waiting for the best moment.
I would have stood there for hours and hours, staring at them blankly, slowly but painfully feeling my heart break into a million pieces, but Emily decided to do something first. She cleared her voice really loudly. There were about infinite other ways I would have done it, but at least it made them stop. Cameron looked at me in shock, cheeks bright red with embarrassment. They were at the school gate, for god's sake! Didn't they know that people were expected to walk through the school gate? If they wanted some privacy, they could go somewhere else: I wasn't moving from here. That was when I realized that we were the only people around. Was it really that early?
Lexi, on the other hand, was staring at me disgustedly, resentment and anger painting the expression on her face.
"Just ignore them." She said, with the most hate induced voice I have ever heard. Cameron didn't seem to notice, going back to the activity without hesitation. For him, Lexis's words were orders.
I slowly started walking towards the school building. Emily hurried behind me, desperately looking for something to change the subject. When she finally found it, relief relaxed her facial features. "I think Liam has a crush on me."
She succeeded at whatever she was trying to do: that surprised me. A lot. Liam was one of the best friends of both Noah and Cameron, and if what Emily said was true... "Why do you think that?"
"Well, he can't stop looking at me." Emily responded, glad for catching my attention "And in Spanish, he won't stop touching my hair and flirting with me."
Now that was a piece of news. Liam was one of the nicest guys in school: he was funny, sweet, and the fact that he liked Emily was... perfectly understandable. She herself was pretty, friendly, and definitely a popular heart destination. They were practically made for each other! More importantly, devising a plan to get them together sounded like the perfect excuse to talk with Noah and Cameron. I wasn't hoping for much, but a friendship was way better than an endless fight.
"I'll talk to him," I promised excitedly.
"Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy and all, but I don't think I like him just yet," Emily told me.
"I can work with 'just yet'." I smiled, slowly forming a complicated plan in my head.
Our conversation was over shortly, but I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the day: Lexi had her opportunity. This was mine.
