I am Sam Wolf and hate wolves. At least, I used to.
Ironic, is it not? Not really. My mom, dad, and sister share the same last name, but are not obsessed with wolves, and I was relieved for that. They were not psychopaths.
Yes, Mom and Dad did have six or seven photos of different wolves hanging on the walls, however, the pictures surprisingly did not bother me. Probably because none of the wolves were showing off their sharp, white teeth or looked threatening.
I live in a small, wooden cabin in the middle of the woods called Silver Woods. It is called that because the trees change to silver when the sky of Forlot glistens its light on them. With me are my parents and my sister, and we are the only Wolfs living. I have no grandparents, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, or uncles. I thought nothing of it...
...until that one day.
Before I go into detail on that, I should tell you a little bit about me and my family.
I am the oldest and responsible sister. I had short, brown hair and always wore my green, short-sleeved shirt that had a thick, red line going across, blue pants, and blue and white shoes. These are the clothes that I own, and Mom and Dad refuse to buy me any more. So I finally got the courage to confront them.
"Mom? Dad?" I said. "Why can we not get new clothes? I am sick of wearing the same things and guessing that you are tired of yours as well."
Dad lowered the newspaper that he was reading. "You guessed wrong, Sam. I love my suit and shoes."
"Why are you turning this into a big deal, sweetie?" Mom questioned me. "They are just clothes, and we wash them once every week."
I huffed. "But I will grow out of them eventually. It will not be long until I am twenty-one."
Mom took a sip of her tea and said, "You are only sixteen. You have a long way to go before you turn twenty-one."
In the end, I was unable to convince them to buy fresh clothes for me, Silver, and themselves. They can be stubborn sometimes.
You are wondering who Silver is, are you not? She is my sister. She is fifteen years old, and I did not know that much about her. I do now, but back then, it was as she were avoiding me.
And she was.
At a young age to the age that I am now, I barely spent time with her. Heck, it was rare for me to see her. I might have seen her at least twice, so I was familiar with what she looked like.
The name Silver definitely fits my sister. She had long, silver hair that was tied back and wore a silver, sleeveless dress that reached to her knees and silver boots with heels. At first sight, you would not believe that we are sisters!
Silver would barely speak to me. The most that she would say were "Go away!" and "I do not want to hurt you."
Hurt me? How in the world would she hurt me? She is my sister and would not harm me...right? She loves me...right?
I was in for a treat.
Luckily, our parents were nothing like her. Mom and Dad are outgoing towards me and comfort me whenever I need it. They are neither strict nor lazy and take excellent care of me and Silver. But despite this, they were unsuccessful in pulling Silver out of her bedroom.
My sister had always hid in her room. Her bedroom door was always locked, and I would stand or sit by the door for hours. Even though that I hardly knew her, I still loved her.
So you can understand my excitement when Mom announced that Silver would be attending school for the first time.
"Your sister will be away from that dusty room of hers for a while and hopefully make some friends," my mom stated.
She, Dad, and I were sitting at the kitchen table and discussing about Silver's big day. I was squealing so loudly!
"Sam, please stop," my father said. "We do not want to ruin the surprise, now do we?"
I giggled softly. "Sorry, Dad. I am just excited."
Mom smiled. "Good. I am glad, honey. You can show Silver around the school and teach her new things."
"And she can be friends with my best friends Lorraine and Joan."
Dad straightened his tie. "That will be a great start."
"So when will she start?"
They looked at each other, and then back at me. "Tomorrow."
I pumped my fists in the air. Finally! I was going to spend time with my sister!
If only I knew what I was getting myself into.
At night, I prepared myself for bed. I brushed my teeth, got a cup of water from the kitchen, and brought it to my room. I set it on my nightstand, pulled back the covers, and climbed into bed. I pulled up the covers and rested, waiting for my loving parents to kiss me goodnight.
If it was not obvious already, Silver and I shared separate rooms. They are next to each other, so I could hear the murmurs and strange sounds coming from my sister's room.
I did not bother to listen...until I heard my parents.
They were in Silver's bedroom and tucking her in. They had done that from time to time.
Soon, it escalated to an argument. Mom and Dad must have told her that she was attending my school tomorrow because she started yelling.
"What are you thinking?! I am not going! You hear me? I am not going!"
"It is for the best," Mom whispered. Though, it was loud enough for me to hear. "You will be much happier. Besides, do you really want Sam to get suspicious?"
