Joan scoffed. She was more of the logical person in the group. "A wolf? Get real, Lorraine. How could a wild animal get in the bathroom?"
"Ask the wolf that," Lorraine said firmly.
We then could hear growling and scratching. They were coming from the other side of the door!
"I still do not believe that there is a wolf," Joan announced. "You must be joking."
"Joan, you know how terrible I am at jokes," Lorraine pointed out.
Our intelligent friend went from confident to fearful. "That would mean that...you are not joking."
The dangerous wolf howled, and Lorraine went into a panic.
"We need to flee! Quick! There is no time to waste!"
Joan forced her legs to move, and Lorraine pried herself off the door and followed her. And here I was. Lying in the hospital bed with cords connecting me to machines. Vulnerable.
Alone. With a crazy wolf.
What?! My closest friends had forgotten me and left me with the wolf! I was furious!
"Guys!" I shrieked, my voice shaking. "You forgot something! Or should I say, someone!"
Seconds later, Lorraine and Joan returned. Their cheeks were red as the tomatoes that Mom and Dad buy at the little store, and I could tell right off that they felt bad for accidentally leaving me.
"We are so, so sorry, Sam," Joan apologized. "It is not every day that an animal who eats humans for breakfast breaks into your bathroom."
They rushed over to me, and Lorraine was wheeling a wheelchair. She said, "If it makes you feel better, I locked the bathroom door to prevent the wolf from escaping, and we brought a wheelchair for you."
I thanked them, and they quickly and carefully helped me into the wheelchair. Joan gathered all of our belongings and took off like the speed of light. Lorraine removed the cords from my skin and wheeled me far away from that hospital room, following her.
"What do we do?" Lorraine asked Joan.
"Why are you asking me?"
"You are the smart one."
"Only when the situations are logical. There is nothing normal about some wolf breaking an entry that is on a floor high from the ground!"
"Jeez, Joan. I did not suggest fighting it."
"How about we warn the patients and workers on this floor?" I piped in. "Then the doctors can put out a warning to the other patients and workers and evacuate the hospital."
Joan wrinkled her nose in an attempt to position her glasses where they should be. "I hate wearing glasses. Why the crub did our writer have to give me glasses?"
As we were hurrying in the long hall, we cupped our hands around our mouths and yelled as loud as we could, warning them of the danger that was on our doorstep. Or in this case, the restroom.
A wave of relief washed over us when we overheard grunts and grumbles and saw lights being turned on. A few patients cursed - by that, I mean that they said curse, not bad words - but none of us cared. We were disturbing their peaceful rests, however, it was for the greater good.
"Evacuate the hospital!" I shrieked at the top of my lungs. "There is danger! I repeat! Danger!"
Lorraine pointed at the elevator. "There is the elevator. We need to get on it and push the button for the first floor."
"The readers and Sam and I already knew that," Joan responded. "We are not dumb."
As we got closer and closer to the elevator, my hope grew. Were we going to make it out of here alive? Yes!
I actually thought that we were going to live another day...
...until it showed up. I do not mean some clown. Clowns are illegal in Forlot, and Ava Campbell killed a particular clown, along with a psycho dummy, a certain wizard with no nose, and another villain from a series that has to do with stars going to war, a long time ago.
Do not ask me how I know that.
We gasped as a wolf got in front of the elevator, blocking our path in the process. For a scary and dangerous wolf, it was beautiful. It was small and had white fur. Its eyes were bloody red, and its claws were razor sharp.
It growled at us, and Lorraine confirmed that...
"Sam. Joan. This is the wolf that I had the misfortune of encountering."
"Great," I muttered under my breath. "Just great!"
Lorraine turned her head to Joan. "What do we do?"
"Stay where we are. Be still. Hopefully, it will leave us be."
That is what we ended up doing. I shut my eyes tight, for I could no longer look at the animal, and soon felt something cold and wet on my leg. Curious - and worried - as to what it might be, I slowly opened one eye and saw that it was a nose.
The wolf's nose.
The wolf was sniffing my legs. Sniffing me! Why? 'Cause it was planning to make me its midnight snack?
I let out a yelp when the wolf noticed me looking at it and perched itself on its back legs. It placed its paws on my legs and dug its claws into my skin. It brought its furry face close to my not-so furry face and growled.
I clenched my teeth and held back my screams. I could feel sweat pouring from my forehead. From my palms.
Is this what death is? You go through your day when something goes horribly wrong? 'Cause that stinks.
I braced myself to be the animal's meal of the night - when an incredible event occurred!
A wooden bat smashed into the creature, and the wolf flew back and hit the elevator. It whimpered.
I glanced up and recognized the person who had saved me.
"Thank the heavens that you are here!" I exclaimed happily. "And thank the stars that you brought that bat along with you."
