"I thought that I made it clear to you several times now, that tonight is work for you." Mr. Greenfield said, his voice sounding even raspier than usual. "Yeah you did. Is anything wrong?" I asked him, clueless as to why he seemed to be so angry. "Is anything wrong? I don't know. Not yet I guess" he said as he rolled his eyes at me and I furrowed my eyebrows. "I honestly have no clue what you are talking about. Could you please just tell me so I can do my job?" I told him, getting kinda pissed off at the way he was acting.
"Maybe you shouldn't have had that champagne then, so you wouldn't be that delusional" he muttered as he pointed at the glass in my hand. I looked at it and then back at him, still confused but also offended. "You are here to make sure this event goes as planned and our guest are enjoying themselves, not to have a fun night out with that little friend of yours, getting shit faced once more." Mr. Greenfield tells me as he looks straight into my questioning eyes. "You've got to be kidding me" I muttered under my breath and shook my head at him in disbelief.
"Listen, I've been talking to Luke for about 10 minutes in this past hour that I have been here and all I had was about two sips of champagne. I even asked you if it was okay to bring a plus one and you told me that it was. I've dealt with a grumpy, impolite and really unfriendly business partner of yours, which you could've very well escorted yourself if he was oh so important. You probably just didn't want to deal with his attitude but your stupid PA is just the right person to do that. And just before you pulled me into this room, I was going through a checklist, making sure everything was going to plan. So don't portray me like some sort of alcoholic that doesn't take their job seriously and only wants to have fun on their company's expenses, because that is not the case!" told him, giving him a piece of my mind once again. I had no clue what it was, but he somehow seemed to get under my skin so much, it made me react that way and I just was unable to hold back.
Mr. Greenfield looked at me and didn't say anything for a moment. I instantly regretted snapping at him like that, even though he also had to be told this. He was my boss after all and I should've contained my emotions. "I...I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what happened last Friday. It was highly unprofessional and I regret it a lot. You might not believe me but I barely ever get drunk, especially like I did that night. I had a though week and I hadn't had any alcohol in quite a while, so it didn't even take too much to knock me out. I'm sorry that I even got you involved in all that. That was really, really unprofessional of me and I totally get that you are angry about it. But trust me, I take my job very seriously and I would never mess something as important as this event up." I rambled, feeling like that apology was overdue. "I also never got to thank you for what you did for me that night" I added quietly. "It's whatever. Just make sure that it won't ever happen again" Mr. Greenfield said with a blank expression and I just nodded quietly.
"I guess that you're probably just not right for this job and I should take the advice that you gave me two weeks ago and look for a new PA after all." he then said coldly, as he eyed me with the usual arrogant look on his face. I looked at him and bit my lip. He wasn't serious, was he? Maybe he was just saying this to get to me and make me work harder. But what if he actually meant it and really considered firing me? He had plenty of people he could call right now and they would probably be here in less than an hour, taking over my job gladly. He also had a reputation of changing his personal assistants like he changes his underwear, so I wouldn't be the first one to last less than a month.
I really needed this job and I just couldn't have something going wrong for me again. Getting this job was the first thing in a long time that had worked out for me and if I lost it after only two weeks of working, I'd be crushed. Not to mention the fact that I desperately needed it to be able to make a living for myself.
"I...I uhm have to check if the band is ready" I mumbled after moment and looked up at him for a second. There was a lump in my throat and had I been alone, I would've started crying by now. I did my best to not do just that in front of Mr. Greenfield though, which was really hard but I somehow managed. He didn't say anything and just nodded, before I turned around and walked out of the staff room and back into the crowded halls.
