I spent the rest of my weekend doing as many things as I could, just wanting my mind to be busy and stop myself from thinking about what happened at the charity ball too much. By Sunday evening I had cleaned my entire flat, been grocery shopping, done the laundry, baked a cake, reorganised my entire closet and just now finished reading part three of the Harry Potter series. It was 10pm by now and I decided to call it a night, since I had to get up early for work the next day. I was really worried about coming face to face with Mr. Greenfield again, which made it pretty hard for me to fall asleep once more.
When my alarm woke me up the next morning, I would've loved to just stay in bed for the whole day, maybe even week. I dreaded going to work, since I was getting more and more nervous about being confronted with Mr. Greenfield.
After I had forced myself out of bed and gotten ready, I changed into a cream coloured shirt, pants and a matching blazer, before quickly making myself a cup of tea. A few minutes later, I checked the time and saw that my bus was gonna leave in only 5 minutes. I grabbed my purse, making my way to the bus station as fast as I could in my heels. They weren't extremely high so I luckily managed to get there in time to catch my bus. I really didn't want to be late and give my boss any more reasons to be mad at me.I arrived at work a few minutes early but saw that the lights in Mr. Greenfield's office were already on. I sighed, staring at the door for a few seconds, before knocking and walking in. "Good morning, Mrs. Bauer" he said as he looked up from his laptop and at me. " Morning" I responded as I walked over to his desk. "Anything you need me to do?" I asked him and he nodded. "I sent you a mail with all the details but I basically need you to take care of sending thank you cards to everyone who made a donation for the Cancer Foundation" Mr. Greenfield explained and I nodded, not saying anything else as I just walked out again. I had no intents of acting nice after how he treated me at the charity ball. I was here to do my work and that was it, after all, he wanted me to be more professional.
I closed the door behind me and let out a deep breath, before walking into my office and starting to work on the cards, as well as answering some emails and calls. The whole day went by without having to come into contact with Mr. Greenfield any more, which I was really glad about. I had a feeling that maybe that was because he didn't want to deal with me either.
"Hey, thought I'd come and check on you. See if big boss is being a little asshole to you still." Luke's voice tore me out of my thoughts as he stepped into my office after knocking. "Hey Luke" I said with a soft smile. It was kinda refreshing to see him, after pretty much spending the whole day alone in my here. "I've seen him for about a minute this morning and that's pretty much it" I told Luke and shrugged. "Well that's good, right? I swear if he starts bitching around again, call me and I will gladly give him a piece of my mind" he insisted, which made me laugh softly. "It's cute of you but I don't want you to risk your job as well" I said and frowned, at the thought of Mr. Greenfield threatening to fire me. I was still really worried about this but I tried my best not to show it or let it drag me down.
"You're still worrying about this Steffi, aren't you?" Luke asked me, pretty much reading my mind as he sat down on my desk. "Had a hard time sleeping the past few nights. It's been on my mind constantly" I mumbled as I looked at him.
"Steffi, don't let it get to you. I know it's easier said than done but try to ignore what he said. I'm sure that he didn't really mean it. He probably knew that it would have an effect on you and did it purely to get under your skin or something" Luke explained, trying to make me feel better. "I don't know, Luke. But you're right, I can't let it get to me too much. It's just not that easy though for some reason" I told him and he nodded understanding. "I can only repeat myself. -You are doing a great job, Steffi. Remember that." Luke reassured me and gave me a quick hug. "Call me if you need to talk or anything, yeah?" he said as he got up again and I nodded. "Thank you, Luke. It means a lot. See you" I said with a small smile as he waved. It was nice knowing that someone cared for me and I wasn't completely alone in this situation. "See you, Steffi. Keep your head up" he told me, before leaving my office again.
It was almost 6pm when I decided to call it a day and left the office, just wanting to get home and take a long relaxing shower. When I came home about half an hour later, I did exactly that. I just stood under the hot water, wishing I'd own a bathtub. I also ended up washing my hair and got out of the shower almost an hour later, feeling a lot more relaxed.
I walked into my bedroom, a towel wrapped around my body and hair, as I started to look for my phone. I searched the whole flat and my purse but didn't find it anywhere, figuring that I must've left it at work. I groaned in annoyance as I realised that I needed it as my alarm in the morning, meaning I had to go grab it real quick. I threw on a pair of black leggings and a simple grey shirt, before quickly blow drying my hair. I then put on my shoes and coat and grabbed my keys and wallet, ready to walk to the bus station.
When I arrived at the office building it was a little after 9pm. I took out my key card but was surprised as the doors opened without me having to use it. Had someone forgotten to lock everything up? Or maybe there were still some cleaners here?
I made my way to the top floor, using the elevator as always. When I walked past Mr. Greenfield's office to get my phone, I noticed that his lights were still on. He must've forgotten to turn them off. He wouldn't be at the office at almost 9:30pm, would he? I shrugged it off and went into my office, sure enough finding my phone lying on top of my laptop. I quickly grabbed it and put it in my pocket, before leaving again. I just wanted to get back home again as fast as possible.
As I passed Mr. Greenfield's office once more, I heard some noise in there and instantly got scared. What if someone had broken in and was robbing his office? I couldn't just leave and do nothing. I also didn't want to call the police though, because maybe it was just a cleaning lady after all and I would only cause unnecessary trouble. I decided that I should just go and check real quick. I bit my lip as I opened the door, kind of nervous and unsure what to expect.
