After my unexpected confession, Mike and I naturally drifted. Therefore I had my answer. He didn't feel the same. And I took that as a sign to move along and instead of hanging with the normal gang, I have been getting closer to Steve. Because of his older age, he understood more, or so he seemed to convince himself to believe, about breakups considering his breakup with Nancy.

People assumed we were together but we didn't let the rumours get to us. He was there for me after my rejection and brought me ice cream to make me feel better.

At the star mall I'm hanging out with Steve at his work during his break and as always he shouts ice cream and we're busy laughing like friends do and Mike appears out of nowhere, standing at the end of our booth.

I look at Steve in confusion and he does the same to me.

"Uhh ... can we help you?"

He looks directly at me, "can we talk?"

I look over at Steve unable to form the words, what do I say?

He simply just nods and takes his leave as his break has now ended. Mike slides into the booth with me and we sit there in silence for a while.

I gotta try enlighten to mood somehow, "um ... ice cream?"

Mike shakes his head, rejecting my offer as I retract myself. Okay then.

"Listen, Y/N. The group misses you," Mike pauses for a moment, "I miss you."

"I wasn't getting that vibe from you earlier."

"I know but come on Y/N, you're my best friend. How was I suppose to react?"

"Give me an answer? Something. Anything."

"You want an answer? Fine. I have been in love with you since we were kids Y/N."

"Then why didn't you say that before."

"Because that day, you were right about one thing; I was still with El."

"And now you're not so you're coming to me, you want me to be rebound girl?."

"What? No. Y/N--"

"I won't be second best Mike."

"You were never second best. It just took this long for me to realise El was second best. It was never you."
