Jayden's grey eyes met my hazel ones in the rearview mirror. He looked concerned. The road was pretty empty, only once every few minutes a car would pass by in the opposite lane. There was no one behind us and no one in front of us. Still, Jayden didn't speed at all. He kept just below the speed limit, driving very carefully and steadily as he always did. Nothing like Hannah drove.
Turning down the music, Jayden cleared his throat. "Are you really okay with this?" He asked. "You don't know this kid..."
"I don't care." I snarled. "If he needs a place to stay over the holidays then I'm happy to take him in."
"Did you consult your parents?"
"If they don't let him stay I'll go back to my place with him. He's slept there before. Since Brian's gonna be out of town for a few days he might be able to sleep in his bed." I let my chin rest in my palm as I looked out the window.
We'd only been a few minutes from my house when Brian called and now we were going back to the campus grounds to pick up Corey. What would've been just an hour drive had turned into a three-hour drive. I just hoped Corey's dad hadn't flipped. He didn't take to Christmas very well after divorcing his wife. Celebrating it all alone was heartbreaking for him. Therefore he had forced Corey to stay behind when his mom and her new boyfriend were about to leave for a Christmas skiing trip.
"Well let's make sure we give him the best Christmas ever!" Kennedy exclaimed after a few seconds of suffocating silence. His voice was loud, unlike his usual whisper-like tone.
"Or we could just focus on making it as good as we can... I doubt he'll be in a very good mood..." Jayden sighed.

Just as expected, the town around the university was pretty deserted. Corey was supposed to be outside my apartment waiting for us. I didn't have the kid's number, so seeing him on the sidewalk with his suitcase was a relief. Jayden slowed the car down to a stop and I unbuckled my seatbelt.
Getting out of the warm car was rather unpleasant. The winds were frosty and the air chilled my skin. "Hey, Corey..." I said. He looked up from his suitcase when he heard me and stood up, grabbing the suitcase while doing so. He didn't just have the suitcase though. There was also a large backpack over his shoulder. I raised a brow, surely he didn't need two bags full of clothes for a few days away from home. I heard the car doors open and close behind me as both Kennedy and Jayden got out to say hello. I wrapped my arms around his waist and hugged him. He wrapped one of his arms around my neck, he was shivering in the cold, not wearing a coat. "You okay?" I asked him.
"Yeah..." he whispered, but I could hear the obvious lie. His voice was weak and frightened. He had a dark bruise over the right side of his face and a busted lip. I squeezed him tighter. As much as I wanted to act like an older brother, it was hard since he was almost as tall as Jayden. He was younger than me, his height was unfair and frustrating. At least I had more muscle than him. I pulled away and frowned at his face, he'd been hit.
"These are my... boyfriends..." I mumbled as Jayden and Kennedy came up by my side.
"Hi..." They both said, taking turns to shake his hand.
After that Corey took a step to the side and revealed a small girl standing behind him, clutching his leg firmly while burying her face in the fabric of his pants. She had what I assumed was Corey's jacket wrapped around her thin frame. "This is my little sister, you wanna introduce yourself?" He asked her, placing his hand on her back. She shook her head quickly, still pressing her face against her brother's leg. He sighed. "Her name is Maple. She's kinda shy..." he mumbled.
