The series of events the night before seemed far from Sage's mind as she lay next to the alpha. She slept peacefully that night and forgot how happy sleeping next to another pack mate made her. Gabe has worked his way into falling asleep within Sage's belly, curled up like a ball. She didn't want to move away, but she knew she had to get some food. Moving as slow as her body would let her, she pulled away from the pile of snuggling boys before heading out of the den. It seemed the rest of the pack was still asleep, and the sun was barely up. Good, she got first pick at prey. Heading over to the prey pile, her eyes caught sight of movement behind the alphas den, and a blur of dark fur disappeared into the forest. Raven. Where was she going? Sage furrowed her brow before shaking her head and taking a plump rabbit for herself. When she carried it back towards the front of the alphas den, a soft voice filled her ears. She left her rabbit and followed the voice behind the alphas den, her paws moving quietly so not to he heard by Raven. In front of Raven was a male Sage didn't have to look twice at to recognize. Krater. Seriously? Could I just stay out of trouble for one day? Sage thought to herself before hiding under a thick thorn bush.
"So both Arrow and Sage are in the pack now?" Krater's voice was calm but filled with hatred when he spoke the pups names.
"Yes and like I said last night, Sage is hated amongst the pack. It won't be long before she isn't under Carter's protection and you can have her." Raven sounded like her body was filled with pain, her eyes looked wet from recent tears.
"When I have her and her brother, I'll give you your son back." Krater dipped his head and turned to leave, leaving Raven with tears falling around her cheeks. The dark colored shewolf stared after him before lowering herself to the ground to weep when he was far enough away. Sage felt rage form in her chest but also sorrow for the young female. Backing away from where Raven weeped, Sage turned back into the camp. She needed to tell Carter, but instead of seeing him in the den, he had disappeared. Gabe was still asleep, but where was Carter? Sage moved into the den and curled around Gabriel, her eyes studying the sleeping pup before looking up towards the den entrance where a white males form now stood.
"I went looking for you, you okay?" His voice was laced with worry.
"I went to get breakfast, but something caught my attention. Raven was heading into the forest behind your den." Sage placed her tail over Gabe as she spoke so her talking wouldn't wake him.
"Why would she be going back there?"
"She was speaking to a rogue, and not just any rogue." Sage sighed before continuing, "She was speaking with Krater."
Carter narrowed his eyes before moving into the den quickly to speak in a hushed voice. "Are you certain?"
"Yes."
Carter pulled back some and moved outside the den, the sun glowing around his white fur as he looked back and down at her with his body poised in a show of dominance. A sharp bark left him before starting into a howl, a call to wake the pack. He waited for a few moments as wolves poured out of their dens.
"Carter..don't hurt her. She has no choice he has her son." Sage spoke these words softly, and when she finished, Carter turned towards Sage with his eyes flashing in fear.
"Krater has Ren?" The white male showed sadness for an instant. "I though Ren died like his sister.."
"I don't know, Carter. All I know is he won't give him back until Krater has me."
Carter nodded and turned back towards his pack, who had gathered before him. He called Raven out among them, calling her towards him. The female pushed her way through the crowd, cowering before the alpha with tears threatening to fall once more over her face.
"The rest of you are dismissed. Raven come inside my den." Carter turned away and guided the female inside, her eyes moving between the alpha to Sage. The white male sat in front of Sage, protecting her in a way from the dark female.
"I know you met with Krater. And I know he has Ren, but I'm not mad. I understand why you are afraid so I'm going to help you get him back, only if you stop giving him information on Sage and her brother." Her eyes lit up with fear as he spoke, her tail tucking beneath her.
"Yes, Alpha." She looked to the ground before more tears fell. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry, you had no choice. You will remain in my den for your protection, and I will track Krater down and get Ren back."
Sage felt pride swell in her chest at the alpha being so kind to a broken mother, ears pinning back as she smiled up at Carter. There was something about this male that made her awestruck.
