Juliet
Running out of the car, I hightail it to the front desk of the hospital. It's about five minutes past noon and we landed in LA at two in the morning. Lisa told us to stay at her house for the night and that we would leave for the hospital first thing in the morning. Little did I know that first thing in the morning actually meant first thing in the afternoon.
"Jules, slow your roll!" Maris yells, running after me, but she's too slow. I get to the front desk before any of them.
"Excuse me?" I say to the receptionist typing on her computer. I need to know if Ashton was moved to a different section of the hospital.
"May I help you?" She asks, looking up at me.
"Yes," I look to my left to see Maris standing beside me and then continue speaking. "Could you tell me what room Ashton McAllister is in?" She starts typing as I look around the lobby, seeing my Aunt walking to the elevator in her scrubs with a coworker.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to give you any information." The receptionist says.
"You don't have to give me any information about his condition, I just need to know the room number."
"Only family at this time."
"But you don't understand,"
"She's okay, Maureen." A woman says from behind me. I turn around on my heels and see Dr. McAllister walking up to us. "Come with me girls." She says, walking towards the elevator.
"Is he awake yet? Is he in pain? Can he speak?" I ask, rapidly as she presses the elevator button.
"No, he hasn't woken up yet. I'm not allowed to work on him because he's my son, but I do know that when he does wake up, he is going to be in a lot of pain. It's going to take a while for the medicine to take effect. I don't want him talking a lot because of he does he may hurt something or start having breathing problems. Doctors took the tubes out of his throat yesterday so now we know that he can breathe properly on his own. They are taking him off of everything as we speak." By the time she finishes telling me about Ashton, the elevator doors open and we walk onto the ICU floor. We stop in-front of the door Maris and I were at a month ago and Ashton's mom looks at me.
"I want you to wait out here for now, but... Juliet, you were the last thing that my son saw before he fell unconscious. I want you to be the first thing he sees when he opens his eyes." She says, putting her hand on my shoulder. I hear myself gasp and look to Maris. She smiles at me and nods, telling me that this is the right thing to do. I nod to Ashton's mom as she walks into his room and closes the door behind her.
I lean against the wall with Maris and look over my outfit to make sure I'm presentable.
It's like my thigh high boots and sweater dress are glued to me.
"You look hot, babes." Maris whispers in my ear. I smile at her and then hold my hands together, trying to remain calm. "Are you nervous?"
"Yeah." I admit. Before she has time to answer, I hear Ashton's door open and his mom comes into view gesturing me to come to her.
"For the first few minutes you're going to see that his breathing will be irregular. Once he opens his eyes and gets used to everything, he'll be fine." I nod and release a deep breath that I didn't know I had inside of me. "There is a chair right next to his bed. He should be awake any minute. If you need anything, press the red button next to the IV okay?"
"Okay. Thank you, Dr. McAllister."
"Sweetheart, I think you can call me Jenny." She says, smiling. I return her smile and watch as she moves out of the doorway. I walk inside of the white room and gasp in awe of the man lying in a hospital bed. I hear the door close behind me and sit in the chair next to his bed, looking over him.
