I stared ahead my eyes emotionless. A sudden wave of depression has overtaken me today. I was morning for Issac.
"Mara?" I turned around to Ty who had a worried gaze.
"You alright?" He asks.
"Yeah why you ask?" Meg frowns on my other side.
"You, you haven't said a word since yesterday? Did something happen?" I massage my head.
"Yes for the sixteenth time, I'm good" I sigh.
"But you-"
"I said I'm fine!" I yell out. I flinch when I realise what I did. I close my locker and walk away muttering a small apology to a shocked Meg.
I slump against the bathroom wall tears beginning to make there way up again but I blink them away.
"Mara?" I look up at Hash. She smiles sadly to me.
"January 5th?" I chuckle.
"January 5th," I confirm. She holds out her arms to me and I embrace her warm hug. Hash was the only one apart from Brandon who knew about Issac.
"Don't worry everything's gonna be fine," I sniffle and nod.
"I just, miss him so much" I sob into her shoulder. She sighs rubbing circles in my back. We spend the rest of break like that and even end up skipping French. I sigh hearing the bell ring. As I pull away Hash gives me an encouraging smile.
"Don't feel down, I know Issac wouldn't like to see you in this state" I nod then go to clean up.
As we went in for PE, I noticed Logan staring at me with worry and guilt. I didn't have the courage to smile as I just went over and apologised to Ty and Meg. They gave me sympathetic smiles.
"Its okay, we all get bad days" Meg replied. I only nod in response. Brandon looks at me before he seems to remember today's date. His face turns to a sorrowful one.
"Is it Issac-" I stop him with a glare.
"Don't even mention his name, please" I sigh again.
"Okay," he mutters. Logan looks between us.
"Who is Issac?" He asks.
"No one," Hash, Brandon and I reply to him. I finished stretching and ran off starting the laps.
As I closed my locker Logan leaned on a near one beside mine. It was the end of the day and I was ready to leave. His eyes gazed at me.
"What?" I ask him. He frowns.
"Mara, I know you're hurting, let me help you please" I look down and breath in. I'm about to reply when suddenly a voice calls me.
"Yo Riles," I turned around and for the first time today my face brightened. I stared at Cassey. He was in a dark green shirt a black jacket and military pants and boots. He smiled at me arms open.
"Cassey!" I yelled running to him. He grunted stumbling a little as I jumped in his arms. He chuckled.
"What are you doing here?" I asked nuzzling my head into his shoulder. He sighed.
"Azrael sent me to get you, were going to see Ma Uzule," he said next to my ear. I breathed in his scent before realising where we stood. I pulled away letting him set me down. I turned to Logan who seemed ready to murder anyone anytime. His eyes were flashing between green and red as he debated on either to punch Cassey or curse his existence.
"Cassey this is Logan," Cassey looks to Logan unfazed by the look of disgust he received. To him it seemed like racism all over again but I knew too well that arm around my shoulder was a cause.
The rest walked up behind Logan. When Martha and Ray saw Cassey, Martha sneered.
"Black Dog," she spat her eyes narrowing while Ray held her back from approaching Cass. I sighed.
"Well if it isn't Hansel and Gretel," he chuckled. Ray glared.
"You know the rules no further than ten feet from us, so what are you doing here?" He snarled.
"What's it looking like I'm here for Riles," he shrugged. Ray growled at him but Hash held her hand to his shoulder while Brandon held back Martha who kept trying to get to Cassey.
"Your way out of your turfs here land boy," Martha stated. He glared at her.
"Let's get the hell out of here before I rip your cuz to shreads girl" I frowned at him. He let go of my shoulder and turned around walking off. Cassey knew better than to start a fight in places like these.
"That was uncalled for," I told Martha. She stared at me dumbfounded.
"Are you kidding!? He's the danger here-"
"Martha, just stop, I'll get going tell Aunt Gabriela I'll be back tomorrow" I cut her off. Her eyes narrowed and she scoffed.
"Following him?" She asked. I sighed.
"Yes, either you like it or not," I stated through gritted teeth. I didn't wait any longer and ran after Cassey.
We went through the streets Cassey having his hands shoved in his pockets while we walked. He had an angered look on. I frowned grabbing his forearm. He halted.
"Cass, don't listen to them, Martha judges too quickly and Ray is overprotective, don't mind them" his brown eyes gazed in my blue ones before he leaned over. His head went to rest on my shoulder and he breathed out shakily.
"They took you from me, from us, then pretend as if we're the bad guys, its so fucking unfair" I frowned.
"I'm sorry Cass, I just wish things could be like before" I spoke in a low voice while caressing his hair. Some pedestrians eyed us weirdly.
"Things can change," he says looking up at me. I stare into his eyes full of determination.
"Cass, no" the idea he had in mind was for me to move in with them without telling Aunt Gabriela. This could lead to a call in court or for me to never get a chance to see him again.
"C'mmon we're family Riles! You should be with us!" He stated. I sighed.
"Let's not talk about this today," I muttered looking at the pavement. I heard him sigh then walk away.
"Let's get going before Big bro Azrael gets mad" he says grabbing my hand. I nod in reply.
