Previously on Dragon Ball Z-- I'm just kidding

"Y/N... transferred to... a school called Matsubara... two years ago."

Matsu... bara...?

Memories started flooding back to him one by one.

"When the ball comes your way, don't focus everything on your arms. You have to move your legs."

~~

"You know that guy from Matsubara?"

"You mean their captain?"

"Yeah. I heard he was training under some pretty well-known coaches."

"Really?"

~~

"Those guys are so stuck up."

"Dude, shut up. Their captain might hear you."

"What? Are you scared?"

"Listen to him, man. That guy's not someone you wanna mess with."

"He's the Living Satan."

~~

"What the hell? They're good. Especially their captain."

"Right? I wouldn't be surprised if he joined the Japanese V-League."

"Who's to say he hasn't been scouted already? With skills like that, there's no way no one's fighting to recruit him."

~~

"There's a lot of rumors surrounding Matsubara's number one."

"Like what?"

"I heard he got trained by the big guys in the UK."

"I heard that too! Think it's true?"

~~

"Woah! Hinata, your spikes are getting better."

"Really? It must be because I've been practicing with Yama-senpai and the others."

"Yama-senpai?"

"Yeah! Well, I don't really know his last name, but it's Matsubara's captain!"

Tobio's eyes gradually widened in realization. After all this time... He was within arm's reach. He couldn't believe he didn't notice.

"Tobio...?"

"Yama..."

"Yama...?"

"He was around me... This whole time..." The setter mumbled to himself.

But... why didn't he say anything...? Does he not recognize me...? Or...is he just afraid?

"My boy... I felt it right that... I tell you... before... it's too late..."

Tobio heard a coughing fit on the other line. "Grandpa?"

"I-I'm fine--"

He was cut off by another coughing fit. "Dad?"  he heard his mother say. "Dad! Are you okay?!"

"Grandpa!"

"G-Go...f-find him..."

That was the last thing Tobio heard before the call was cut. He slowly lowered the phone, the annoying beeping fading away. He was in a state of shock. It took a while for things to sink in. When they did, he couldn't help the tears that streamed down his face.
