I learned the hard way that messing with Lilly can end with a trip to the hospital. I walk to the corner.
The corner is a room that is full of boxes. It's in the back right corner of the ship and is where Faith and I go when we get kicked from the room and are not allowed to stay in the hall, which is more and more common every night.
I walk in and get in a box. It's a newer one and smells like a factory. I hate that smell, I've spent so much of my life surrounded by that smell. I realized that I forgot my MP3 player. I head back to fetch it. When I get there a boy is coming around the corner. I hide behind an open door and watch through the crack.
He knocks a secret password on our door.
KNOCK KNOCK,
RAP RAP RAP ,
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
As he finishes Lilly opens the door and smiles at him. I can tell that they are going to kiss, and I think why not get my revenge back at Lilly?
As soon as they start to kiss she pulls him inside. I walk calmly into the hall again and start to open the door before I can think my way through. As I come in I just stare at them. They are standing in the middle of the room, just kissing. I think I'm going to barf and turn slightly to leave but think better. Lilly sees movement, aka me, and she screams. I'm not going to repeat her exact words,because I want this book to be kid appropriate, and I seriously think she has a copyright on them.
So the story goes like this. Lilly fell in love with a boy, Tyler , all the way back in the block. They were 'not allowed' to be in love because they were from different neighborhoods, so it was hard to see each other. Tyler heard about the plan to sail away, so he and Lilly agreed to go, together. They were stationed at different boat's, so far through the whole trip, so Tyler taught himself to swing across the boats like a pirate to see his lover. Gross. So they now meet often. They were going to tell their friends, but for some reason people thought that they shouldn't be in love. They made this HUGE deal about it.
"What is this, Romeo and Juliet? We already are making new laws and finding new ways of life, so just decide that's how you want to be living." I tell them. They spend fifteen minutes telling me why basically they are embarrassed to say that. Exasperated I tell them something I never thought I'd say.
"O.K., so you can't do the whole meet with your secret lover thing, but why not fake each others deaths! Then you guys could hide in the corner! Faith and I will bring you food, and you guys can be together, alone! The boxes are all in there, so you can be together without kicking your own cabin mates out of their bedroom. Does that work? "I ask exasperated.
"Is that alright with you care bear?" Lilly coo's to Tyler.
"Fine by me my little water Lilly." Tyler replied and boops her on the nose, they both leaned in to kiss.
"STOP! Before you guys start kissing, try and make it to the corner, will ya?" I beg. They ignore me. I think I might barf!
I race to tell Faith everything. She seems excited to be in a room without Lilly. She gathers her stuff, and we both headed back to the cabin. Lilly and Tyler are packing up Lilly's stuff. The walls were never so bare seeming, and the room seemed to grow. I am so glad she is gone.
The next day was stormy, and Faith and I claimed to have seen two people fall over, a boy from another ship, and Lilly. Some people at first doubted us. We haven't had someone fall overboard in almost two weeks, so all of a sudden, two in a day?
When nobody could find Lilly or Tyler, they decided our story checks out and it became just two more deaths.
Just two more deaths.
