EARLIER
Guards burst into the room. Kari was pulled away, she yelled at the doctor, who was yelling that she was crazy. I look for a way to escape, and headed for a gap between the men, but the doctor moves with precision that I've only seen from one type of person, a Keeper. He blocks my way, challenging me, but I know better. I think for a second, then I hear Akari yell.
" Faith, RUN!" is all I hear. I jump from the bed to the top of a shelf, to an open window. The Keeper curses under his breath and I look once more back to Kari, just as they inject her with something and she goes limp. I have to go now. I jump out, and hit the ground running. I don't stop and run straight at the boat. Just like old times. Just the wind in my hair, the earth beneath my feet and my enemies far away, sorta.
I hear him burst out the door behind me. I turn to the jungle. Once I get there I turn completely around and climb a tree. There are large fruits in the tree, poisonous fruit. He runs in where I came in and stops. I made no trail, on purpose of course. He starts looking up and I know it's only a matter of time. I rake my brain desperately for ideas.
"I know you're here Faith. I'll tell you what, I'll make you a deal. If you turn yourself in, I'll not take it out on innocent bystanders." He says impatient, but I stay put. Not because I don't believe him, but I know he would hurt everyone else anyways.
The only way he could know my name is because Kari yelled it when telling me to escape. If he knows from somewhere else, he would find me soon.
It starts raining, making it hard to hold onto the tree, but there were worse places to be. He's coming closer, searching high and low for me, quite literally.
"It's raining cats and dogs out here." He mumbled under his breath. That gives me an idea. I pull a big fruit carefully off the tree, mindful to not shake the branches and give away my position. I test its surface, its underripe, but still too soft to knock someone unconscious from this height, no matter how hard I throw. I aim at the bushes, but think better. A few trees over is a tall tree that would be great for hiding in. I throw the fruit as high and far as I can. It snaps a branch, making it fall to the ground. He turns slowly and walks to the tree silently and begins to climb. As soon as he is out of sight I practically jump from the tree and race for the boat.
Water rushing down from the hills more inland. I can tell there will be another flood. I hope he can't get down until the storm is over, or ever. I find Coral and Emma. Emma is crying. Coral looks like she has no emotions, I know what she is doing. In the end, hiding your emotions just makes them stronger and harder to control.
" Kari was taken to an asylum!" Emma wailed. Coral nodded. I give them both hugs. Nobody leaves the asylum and most don't even know where it is. Kari is great at being the first to do things, she will be the first to either be let out or escape, but now is not the time.
"There is a Keeper, we have to clear Karis name and stop him." I say. Emma turns white and more tears enter her wide eyes. Coral starts shaking her head no, as if thinking it will make it so.
"No, no. How? That's not possible." she mumbles. Her voice cracks and shakes as she speaks. I let her come to her senses on her own. Everyone is different under pressure. I turn to Emma
"Tell everyone that there is a Keeper. He is in the jungle. Make sure everyone looks for him. We need to stop him." I say slowly. She nodded. I grabb Coral's hand. We take a camera from my room. Nobody knows about it, so it is perfect for the job. We head out in the pouring rain. The hidden ladder is there just like Kari said, and is slick with water from the rain. We barely make it. We get to the room and open the door. Nobody is there. I walk in circles around the room taking pictures.
There is a Keepers uniform laid out on the bed. On a table connected to the wall, there is a small box with an open top. Two pills are inside, both are purple. There are cupcake recipes on the wall above it. His plan was to hide them on cupcakes disguised as sprinkles, but what are they?
"I believe this is not you room ladies." came a voice, a familiar voice. In a fluid motion I swung around and aimed a kick for his personal spot.
Direct hit. He stagers back, bent over then straightens up again, only a little flustered. I aim another kick at his head. His hand comes out at lightning speed and grabs my foot, then twists my leg. I hop back, and fall over. My leg screams at me, but I'm on my feet in a flash.
He walks towards us, slowly. I dive for the bed to take the emergency escape exit, but it is locked to the floor. I stand up. He has Coral and is choking her. I might not be a genius, but I'm not a fool. I know when to give up. I put my hands up slowly. When he steps towards me I bring my knee up to his head. It should have knocked him out. We should have gotten away. We should have both gotten off that stupid island alive, but you know what they say. Life isn't fair, nothing is.
