She falls a few feet, then slows until she is going at about five miles an hour. When she reaches the bottom, she takes the harness off and lets go. It zips up to its spot and pulls itself into the cubby, which then closes. I pull it out and put it on. I take a leap of faith. No pun intended.
I'm flying and it feels nice. Then I'm falling and I don't stop. The ground rushes up to meet me and at last second it slows down and I land finally on solid ground, or at least on solid boat. My frizzy white hair wasn't sticking out around my head like it normally does, instead it stuck to the sides of my face and chin. We went straight to Emma's room. When we get to her boats hallway, everything is quiet. No chatting, no arguments, no music, just silence. We get to Emma's room and like all rooms, the door is closed. I motion for Coral to be on guard. I open the door, fast and silent. I have never been happier that a door didn't creek. The Keeper has Emma tied to the wooden bed post with rope, his blinding white suit has dark red stains on it. If he hurt Emma, he will not leave this room. Ever. He is holding a dagger, and Emma is silently crying.
"I know it was you. I've worked too hard on this plan and nobody will stop me, least of all a little girl. Tell me who told you, and I might make it quick." He whispers wickedly. I can't see his face but I know he will have the grin. All keepers make this evil grin before they hurt somebody.
"Not talking? Maybe you'll scream." He cackles and raises the dagger. She squeals and tries to get away. I want more than anything to help her but the timing has to be just right, or I'm no good to both of us. The keeper shuffles close to her. He places the knife on her cheek gently.
"Maybe we'll start with that pretty face," he whispers and she creams. Then, for only a second our eyes meet even though I'm in the shadows. Her quick glance behind him was all he needed. The Keeper whipped around, swinging the dagger as if it were a part of him. I try to dodge, but he is a keeper. I curse under my breath as the blade barely scratches my shoulder, right where my neck had been. He keeps thrusting with the blade and blocking any hits I throw his way. I've fought Keepers before, but always with backup. There is no backup this time, and I can't run either. I have no weapon, and no hope. But Emma needs me, and I have a plan. He swings at me again and hits me straight in the gut. I yell in agony and fall backwards.Coral burst through the door but with a single hit she is thrown into the hallway with a thud. I recoil with all the pain but I know what I have to do. The Keeper turned towards Emma, and I jump on him.
He goes down too easily. I think he is letting us catch him. Then he jumps up and fights back again. Coral comes back into the room, a little disoriented but alive. I do my best to hold off the keeper while Coral unties Emma and sends her for help. Then Coral helps me and soon the Keeper is dazed and sitting against the wall, tied with the rope that held Emma just minutes ago. Help soon arrived and pulled the Keeper out of the room. A crowd had gathered, and apparently he had locked everyone in their rooms. Down the hallway doors were being opened again and people were happy. My pain seemed to die away from adrenaline. Coral was staring at something behind the door. I came up behind her.
"What's wrong?" I ask. She points at a girl slumped against the wall. Her eyes are closed. Her breathing shallow and shaky
"Please tell me that's cranberry juice." she says, pointing a shaking finger at the girl. She was in a red puddle, and I may not be an expert, but I know this was not cranberry juice.
