"Guys, there's something in there." she says. In the light of the rising moon, her eyes flicker with fear. Kadek jolts at this. We listen. We can hear the sound of something bumping around in the darkness, but we cannot tell what direction it's coming from. It sounds big. Way bigger than a bird, but maybe the size of a human. Again, I get chills down the back of my spine. Then a slight glow appears in a doorway to our left. Coral runs for the exit, and so do I.
Whatever it is, it has a light, so It can't be an animal. It's big, so it must be a Keeper sent to find us. We have to leave. We get twenty feet when I realize Kadeks not here. I can see his brightly colored shirt in the doorway, slowly walking in.
"Kadek!" I say to Coral. She runs back and carries him out fireman style. She beckens for me to follow her. The tide has already crept up the beach. We run as close to the waters edge as we can until we are forced into the jungle. The water keeps coming closer and closer up the jungle floor. We recognise it as a small flood,it's happened before, it will happen again. This time though, it will permanently affect us if we are even delayed getting back to camp. I hear shouting. I recognise Kadeks voice, and it sounds so much different now. I block it out of my head until he truly does stop. We couldn't care less about crocodiles or sharks or anything else at that matter. We have to tell the others, and we have to get away.As we get pushed into the jungle, deeper and deeper, our worst nightmare occurs. Inevitably, we get lost. Coral finally puts Kadek down and stretches her back. I can hear it pop from over ten feet away. She looks uncomfortable, but says nothing. Kadek on the other hand is crying silently. We both look at him.
"Are you hurt?" I ask when it becomes clear Coral is a tad bit upset with him.
"That could have been a survivor. What if it was one of my friends, or someone from my family? We just ran away!, wait, no. YOU just ran away. If that really was the royals, wouldn't they be at our camp? That glow was like the lamps my people used to make! I never went into that building, only our town council did! Anyone could have been lost in there, not knowing the way out. That lamp seemed faded. What if it was someone who has been stuck in there since the attack?" he shouted bitterly. Coral and I exchange glances.
"Kadek, what is the last thing you remember? Do you really think that someone got lost there and came so close but took a wrong turn? I hate to say it, but unless there is something you're not telling us, we can't go back." I say sympathetically. He looks up. He's not crying anymore but his lip is trembling.
"That's the thing, I remember it all. I just want to forget." He begins.
