It had been five days since you and Jasper's mini prank war. Work had been pretty slow lately, so you decided to close the bookstore for the weekend. It was Friday afternoon and you were walking back home from Fryman's place. You weren't all that hungry, so you just got something to snack on before making dinner for the night. As you got closer to the beach, you dug into your purse with your non-greasy hand to fetch your keys. When the cool medal touched your fingertips, you pulled them out, shuffling a minute to find the right one. You put the key into the lock, turning it until hearing a click. You pushed the door open, looking around the semi-dark living area. You raised an eyebrow, putting your keys and purse on the hook by the door and then dropping the greasy fry tray into the trashcan. "CJ," you called through the house, walking up the stairs. You pushed the door to your room open, seeing that she wasn't there. You opened your bathroom door, seeing everything was in order. "Where is that gem...?" You walked back down the steps, going into the kitchen to start the dishes when you saw a flash of white and orange out the corner of your eye. "What the hell?" You dried your hands on a towel, walking to the back screen door connected to the kitchen. You didn't have a backyard behind your house, so to compensate, you had a small patio. To the left of the patio was the beach. If you were to turn left again from there, you would see the huge cliff that Steven's house sat on top of. Looking to your right you were met with the hard, grey rocks that made up the cliff, a small opening of a cave peeking through. You had been inside the cave a couple times as a kid but there wasn't much to see from what you remembered. You pushed the screen door open, letting it bang closed behind you. "CJ!" You walked down the steps of your patio, your bare feet touching the cool sand. You heaved a content sigh, making your way to the cave. What on Earth is she doing out here? You stood at the entrance of the cave, leaning against the cold rock. The cave floor was cold and damp but relatively smooth. You took small steps, careful so that you wouldn't slip and fall. "CJ, are you in here?" you questioned, your voice echoing off the cave walls. You looked around as you walked, running your fingers against the wall you used for support. The cave was bigger than you remembered, with the occasional stalactite grouping hanging from the ceiling. The echoing of the droplets dripping from the icicle-like structures above you was almost calming. "I have no clue why I stopped coming back in here," you whispered to yourself, looking ahead again. You saw a crystal blue pool of water with black sand circling it. You had no clue where the sunlight was coming from, but that's not what you were concerned about at the moment. Jasper was sitting in the sand at the edge of the small body of water, her legs folded neatly underneath her. You let out a relieved sigh, letting go of the wall and walking towards her. "Hey, CJ...what are you doing in here?" Your feet touched the soft sand as you stood next to her. She looked up at you, her messy hair falling over her face.
"I was following this creature I saw..." She opened her large hands, revealing a small and fragile kitten to you. You sink to your knees, reaching out to the animal. Jasper moved it away from you, looking you in the eye. She made an angry face, but her eyes revealed she was just worried. You smiled softly, sliding closer to her form.
"CJ, I won't hurt the poor thing...I promise." She sighed, placing her hands back in the middle of her lap again. Jasper opened her hands once more, this time letting you reach out to gently touch the kitten's head. It was a grey tabby cat with bright seafoam green eyes. It purred softly, causing Jasper to jump slightly. You giggled. "It's okay, CJ, it's just purring. That means it likes it." Jasper nodded slowly, looking back down at the kitten. She used her thumb to gently pet the cat, smiling when she earned the same response from it.
