Chapter 25: First Words

        It was Saturday evening, and you were on your way back from the only amusement park in town. Funland was steadily becoming more and more popular. Ever since the Fourth of July fireworks show Mr. Smiley planned, the park was filled to the brim with people. You yawned, blinking slowly as you trudged past the Big Donut and onto the soft, cool sand of the beach. You looked up at the dark sky, stars riddled here and there along with the silhouette of a small boy. You chuckled softly, fishing for your keys in your purse. Wait, what? You rubbed at your eyes, squinting up at the figure in the night sky. "Steven?" Leaving your keys in the door, you ran down the beach. The other gems were standing outside of Steven's house, looking up in the sky at him like you had a moment ago. As you approached them, Garnet suddenly jumped over you towards the boardwalk. "What...is going on here," you asked, looking up at the young gem in the sky again. He waved at you, and you waved back, giggling quietly at that lack of shoes on his feet. You turned your head towards the town upon hearing the sound of a car alarm going off. You raised an eyebrow at Garnet as she stood at your side again, announcing that she had found a phone.

        "Who's is it," Amethyst asked, she and Pearl moving closer to the fusion.

        "That's not important," Garnet answered, tapping the screen. The gem put the device on speaker, allowing you, Amethyst, and Pearl to hear the person on the other end.

        "Hello...?," Steven's unsure voice came through the phone.

        "Ground control to Steven Universe," Garnet said calmly.

        "Steven?! Are you okay," Pearl yelled into the device. You winced slightly at her volume, chuckling at her mother-like nature.

        "Oh...yeah! I'm fine," he replied.

        "See? He's got this," Amethyst reassured.

        "Not...exactly," Steven countered, sounding worried. "I think this is some kind of, new power."

        "New power," you asked curiously, looking up at Garnet.

        "Rose could regulate the speed of her descent," she answered, glancing at you.

        "Yeah...and she could control how fast she fell," Amethyst added. You snorted, covering your mouth lightly.

        "That's what I said," Garnet replied. You ruffled Amethyst's long lavender hair, making her laugh.

        "Yeah, Amy," you said with a chuckle, smiling at her.

        "Steven? Try falling a little faster," Pearl said, causing Steven to sigh through the phone.

        "I can't figure out how! And it's taking forever to reach the ground. Can you guys just keep me company until I land," he asked. The Crystal Gems shared a look, smiling softly at each other.

        "Of course, Steven," Garnet said before ending the call. "I'm going to go give this back," she said before jumping away again.

        "You should go and get some rest, (y/n). Humans need their sleep, and you look exhausted," Pearl said, placing a hand on your shoulder.
