Baekhyun's mornings were a sanctuary, a brief respite from the harsh realities that overshadowed his life. The quiet solitude of the early hours allowed him to escape the burden of his parents' crippling debt and the stack of unpaid bills that seemed to grow taller each day. The morning blues, as he affectionately called them, were his salvation.
At 24 years old, Baekhyun was a poster child for a struggling college student. His financial struggles were a constant weight on his shoulders. An orphan since the age of 8, he'd grown up in the confines of an orphanage, only being set free at the age of 20.
Baekhyun's parents had tragically met their end when he was just a child, leaving him to navigate life's twists and turns alone. His past was filled with lonely nights and unspoken pain, but it was the present that brought him to his knees. He was, quite simply, broke.
The transition from the sheltered life of an orphanage to the harsh reality of adulthood had been abrupt, but Baekhyun was not one to shy away from hard work. With the help of the nuns who had cared for him, he secured a job at a local bakery and a small apartment to call his own. It was a fragile start to what he hoped would be a better life.
However, as the months went by, the orphanage's support dwindled, and Baekhyun found himself increasingly alone in the battle for survival. To make ends meet, he embarked on a relentless quest, taking on three jobs a day. It was a grueling routine, and juggling work and college coursework left him perpetually exhausted.
But his commitment to his studies prevailed. When he reached his second year of university, the coursework intensified, and he realized that skipping classes to earn a mere fifty dollars in five hours was not a viable long-term strategy. It was a tough decision, but Baekhyun reluctantly quit two of his jobs, clinging to the one that paid slightly better.
This remaining job required him to work late into the night, which explained his need to sneak into his apartment under the cover of darkness. The night shift had become his lifeline, a way to make a bit more money and keep his dreams of a better future alive.
Each morning, the soothing melodies of Michael Bolton and Phil Collins serenaded Baekhyun as he navigated his daily routine. First, he headed to the bathroom, where he carefully brushed his teeth and washed his face with strawberry-scented face wash. Then, he made his way to a corner of his small apartment that was reserved for his newfound companion – a stray dog named Mongie.
Mongie had entered his life during a storm a few weeks ago. She was a lost puppy, much like Baekhyun felt at times. Initially, he tried to ignore her, but her pleading eyes had quickly melted his heart. He had taken her in, and she became an integral part of his life.
With a cheerful "Wakey-wakey," Baekhyun welcomed the day, dancing to the rhythm of the music with Mongie in his arms. Despite his financial woes, he maintained a resilient and positive spirit. Having his loyal puppy eagerly greet him upon unlocking the apartment door was one of the few joys he cherished.
"Let's have breakfast," he said as he gently placed Mongie on the kitchen floor. Baekhyun returned with a water bowl and a small brush, tending to his dog's oral hygiene with unusual dedication. Not many would think of brushing a dog's teeth daily, but for Baekhyun, it was a labor of love.
After their morning cleaning ritual, Baekhyun fed both himself and Mongie before leaving the apartment to face the day. He hoped that the daily routine would provide a sense of normalcy, a break from the relentless demands of life.
However, today would prove to be different. As he prepared to step out, he ran into Mr. Jung, his landlord, a man he owed six months' worth of rent. "Hey! Byun! I saw you sneak in again last night," Mr. Jung called out, his voice tinged with frustration. Baekhyun didn't want to stand and face the impending confrontation, so he chose to ignore the old man and continued walking.
"Byun! Come back here!" Mr. Jung's persistence was clear as he pursued Baekhyun, chasing after him like an athlete on a mission.
"Hey! Where is my money?" Mr. Jung's words echoed, his breath heavy. Baekhyun had no choice but to flee, darting across the road to escape the landlord's grasp.
Baekhyun knew that Mr. Jung had been more lenient than most landlords, partly because the old man saw in him a reflection of his late son. Despite owing six months' rent, he had been allowed to stay. His habit of sneaking in late at night and quietly leaving in the early hours had likely been a test of the landlord's patience, and today had been the day that patience wore thin.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Jung," Baekhyun muttered with a heavy heart. Tears welled up in his eyes as he tried to explain, "I don't have your money yet. I had to run to save my head. I promise to pay you, just give me some time." His desperation was evident. He never intended to be a sneaky tenant, but the harsh circumstances of his life had forced his hand.
Baekhyun was now running down the street, not looking at the people around him, focused solely on escaping Mr. Jung's wrath. His mind raced, and his heart pounded as he rounded a corner, and then it happened.
Colliding with someone sent him sprawling to the ground, his thoughts and fears all but forgotten in an instant. Baekhyun's heart raced even faster when he realized he had landed on top of a stranger.
"Oh my gosh!" Baekhyun exclaimed, his panic evident as he found himself in this awkward and unexpected position. As he glanced at the stranger beneath him, he couldn't help but be struck by the man's striking appearance. Even with glasses on, he exuded a certain allure, and Baekhyun couldn't help but admire his rugged handsomeness.
"What the freaking heck are you doing!?" the stranger groaned, clearly irritated. "You should look where you're going."
"Sorry, I'm so sorry. I wasn't looking," Baekhyun stammered, struggling to find his footing and get up. But in the midst of it all, he felt a strange sensation as his lower body made contact with the man beneath him. It was as if his entire world had suddenly shifted.
"Why the hell are you still on top of me?" the stranger demanded, frustration evident in his voice. Baekhyun hurriedly scrambled to get off the man, blushing furiously, his cheeks turning a deep shade of red.
As he stood on shaky legs, a crowd of onlookers had gathered, drawn by the unusual spectacle. Baekhyun felt like he wanted to disappear into the ground. He bowed apologetically to the stranger before turning and fleeing the scene, his heart pounding, his mind in a whirlwind of confusion.
All he could think about was escaping Mr. Jung's anger. His run was a desperate race
to avoid an impending confrontation that he wasn't prepared to face.
"I'm not gay," Baekhyun whispered to himself repeatedly as he ran, the words serving as a mantra to push away the bewildering feelings that had arisen during that unexpected encounter. The chaos of the morning was far from over, and Baekhyun's life was about to take a surprising turn.
