Before 7:00 am that morning, Baekhyun stood before Mr. Park's residence, determined not to be late on his first day.
After his phone conversation with Mr. Park that morning, Baekhyun had swiftly prepared for the day. He wore his best outfit and a pair of shoes gifted by his best friend, Jongin, last year. Those shoes were reserved for special occasions, much like today. On most days, Baekhyun preferred his favorite sneakers for everyday wear.
Baekhyun gave his attire one last check to ensure he looked presentable and exhaled, mustering confidence. He reached out to knock on the door of the house where he was about to begin work as a nanny. In under two minutes, the door swung open to reveal a surprised Chanyeol, who was still in his pajamas, bed hair, and a glass of water in hand. Chanyeol hadn't expected Baekhyun to arrive so early.
Chanyeol went to bed with a sense of disappointment the previous night, having been unable to reach the young man on the phone. Normally, he didn't let such things affect him, but something about Baekhyun was different. He felt a growing desire not only to employ him as a nanny but also to keep him close. It was as if he wanted to see that face every day.
However, Sehun's teasing about Baekhyun's age and cuteness didn't help matters. Chanyeol had lost the enthusiasm for emotions five years ago when his ex-fiancée left him for a superstar, leaving their infant son in his care.
When his phone rang a few hours later, it felt as if Chanyeol had slept forever. He half-heartedly swiped the screen to answer the call without checking the caller ID. It disconnected abruptly, and when Chanyeol looked at the number, he realized it was the same person who had been on his mind – Baekhyun. He immediately called the number back.
"Baekhyun? Hello, is that Baekhyun?" he asked, trying not to appear too eager, secretly hoping it was indeed Baekhyun.
Chanyeol's heart swelled when he heard the hesitant "Yes" from the other end. He sensed Baekhyun was struggling to respond, his voice faltering.
"My goodness," Chanyeol whispered, relief washing over him. "I've been trying to reach you. I thought you gave me the wrong number," he said, sitting up slightly and adjusting his pillows to get comfortable.
The next part of the conversation unfolded softly. Chanyeol asked if Baekhyun felt better after being unwell, to which Baekhyun responded with a shy "I feel better, thank you."
The line fell silent, and Chanyeol, overwhelmed by newfound feelings, struggled to start a conversation. "I think I like this boy," he thought to himself.
Summoning courage, he adjusted the lamp's brightness and finally broke the silence, "Um, Baekhyun, I called to know if you'd still be willing to work for me as my son's nanny. Will you?" He held his breath, fearing Baekhyun might have found a better offer.
Baekhyun seemed to take a moment to consider, and Chanyeol held his breath while awaiting the response. He felt relieved and overjoyed when Baekhyun finally answered with a soft "Yes!"
That call left Chanyeol smiling like a teenager who had been noticed by their crush for the first time. He experienced emotions he hadn't felt in years.
Chanyeol had never been attracted to another man since he reached adulthood, until he met Baekhyun a few days ago. He knew that what he was feeling could be a whirlwind ride, but he was willing to give it a try.
Chanyeol got up, still smiling from his conversation with Baekhyun, and checked on his son, Jun, who was still sound asleep. He adjusted Jun's duvet and planted a soft kiss on the child's forehead. Knowing that Baekhyun was on his way, sleep was far from Chanyeol's eyes.
He tried to sleep for an hour, but rest eluded him. He freshened up, brushed his teeth, took a shower, and proceeded to sort out his son's laundry. Afterward, he realized it was 6:45 am and couldn't help but think, "Time flew so quickly."
He took a drink of water and noticed the clock reading 7:00 am, precisely. To his surprise, the doorbell rang – far too early for any visitor. Chanyeol checked the time, thinking it might be a security check. "Hold on," he responded to the unknown visitor. He glanced at the clock once more before answering the door....
——
Baekhyun's heart raced upon hearing Mr. Park's deep voice from inside. He felt elated to be there, but he also checked his reflection in a window before clearing his throat and suppressing the invisible lump in his throat.
The door opened to reveal a surprised Chanyeol. "Good morning, sir," Baekhyun greeted with a bow and a smile. Chanyeol was stunned because he hadn't expected Baekhyun to arrive so early.
"Morning, Baekhyun. I wasn't expecting you this early?" Chanyeol said.
Baekhyun explained, "Um, yes. I-I thought I should come early because I don't want to be late on my first day and other days to come."
Chanyeol agreed, "Y-Yeah, sure. Come in."
Baekhyun, as before, didn't venture far into the house. He removed his shoes and waited for Chanyeol to lock the door before following him to the living room.
"Make yourself comfortable," Chanyeol announced. Baekhyun sat on the couch but remained at the edge, thinking the expensive-looking couch wasn't meant for someone like him. To his surprise, Chanyeol suddenly appeared in front of him, gently lifting him as though he were a child and placing him comfortably on the couch. "I said sit, Baekhyun. You will be working as my
son's nanny, and I suppose I wouldn't have to baby you too, will I?" Chanyeol asserted.Baekhyun wondered why Chanyeol's presence made him feel so uneasy. Chanyeol's deep voice vibrated close to his ears, sending shivers down his spine. "No, No sir," Baekhyun replied, blushing.
Chanyeol excused himself to get dressed and left Baekhyun stunned. "Why is he making me feel this way?" Baekhyun asked himself, feeling overwhelmed. He had been too close to Chanyeol, and their lips had nearly met. He scolded himself to regain control of his emotions before Chanyeol's return.
Chanyeol returned to find a blushing Baekhyun. He settled across from the younger on another couch. Baekhyun now sat more upright. Chanyeol felt intrigued by the butterflies in his stomach, a feeling he hadn't experienced in a long time.
Chanyeol typed something on his phone, sparing Baekhyun a glance. "So you said you will work for me, right?" he asked, studying Baekhyun with a soft but professional gaze.
Baekhyun, shyly blushing, nodded and replied, "Yes, sir. I will work...for you."
Chanyeol asked a crucial question, "Can I trust you, Baekhyun?"
Baekhyun took a moment to absorb the significance of that question, considering the responsibility of looking after Chanyeol's son. He answered, "Yes, sir."
Chanyeol inquired further, expressing his concern for his son's well-being, "Are you sure? Because I need to be sure I can trust you with my son's life and safety. That you won't mistreat him in any way when he's in your care. Can you do that, Baekhyun?"
Baekhyun thought deeply before replying, "I don't know you that well, Mr. Park, but I can assure you that mistreating anyone, let alone a child, is not who I am. You can ask anyone about me. I promise you that I will love him like my own."
Chanyeol thanked him with a soft smile, assuring, "I will hold you to your word. Don't worry about the money. You'll be well compensated. Just be yourself, and if you're good, you'll enjoy working for us."
Baekhyun expressed his gratitude with a bow, and Chanyeol waved it off. "Nah, it's nothing. Come here; let me show you around," Chanyeol offered, ready to introduce Baekhyun to his new role as a nanny.
