Chapter 10 - The change

Next day we countinued our expedition. At the begining of the day we had a beautiful sunny weather. It was around noon when dark clouds started to gather on the blue sky. Soon it became a huge storm. We couldn't see eachother with the teams. Not even with the nearest one.
"We can't continue our way." Erwin said.
"You're right. (Y/N) go and tell the others we won't continue our expedition!" Shadis ordered and I turned around and went to the nearest group. When I reached them they were fighting against titans. Those creatures defeated them easily and left towards Flagon's squad. Moments later I saw one of the soldiers.
"Hey!" I waved to the man. When he got closer I could recognize him. "What are you doing here, Levi? Where are the others?"
"I lost them in this storm." He said and looked around. His shocked and worried expressions were mixed as he noticed the titans' footprints. "I have to get back to them. Now."

A few minutes later we saw the titans. Furlan tried to kill them but he got a hit and one of those creatures grabbed him.  We went as fast as we could to help him but suddenly Levi's horse slipped on a corpse. The short male fell on the ground.
"Shit!" He said. I looked at him but didn't stop. I used my gears and cut off the titan's arm. Unfortunately I couldn't do it in time. Furlan's corpse was still in the monster's mouth. In their eyes I was the next snack. I killed one of them and cut an other's achilles' tendon and the creature fell onto the ground. In the next moment Levi cut the kneeling titan's neck. Thanks to Levi it was a fast fight.

The black haired male jumped of a dead titan and he noticed Isabel's head that was laying next to him. He fell onto his knees and started to sob quietly. I went over to him and I wasn't sure what to do. I lift my hand up to put it on his shoulder.
"Don't you dare to touch me!" He hit my hand away.
"Levi..."
"What?!" He spat.
"I know it's hard but-" He cut me off with a death glare. I didn't dare to say one more word. Soon Erwin and Mike arrived.
"(Y/N)! Levi! Are you the only survivors?" Erwin asked. I didn't have enough time to respond because Levi jumped on the blonde squad leader and both of them fell of the horse. Mike get of the animal and we took our swords to stop the short male.
"Stop!" He warned us and pointed towards Erwin with his sword. "Erwin you bastard!  I'm going to finish why I'm here."
"This is pointless now. The real documents have already arrived to the head of the military. Lovof has lost." And he took the documents out under his jacket and threw it on the ground. Levi's eyes widened and the rage inside him increased.
"So you knew. Then why did you let us join to the corps?"
"I thought you and your friends could lend us your strength and then the  humanity finally had a chance to win."
"But Isabel and Furlan are dead because of you and i'm going to kill you too!" He yelled and cut towards Erwin who caught the sword. The fresh blood streamed down on the weapon and also on his hand.
"Because of me? Do you think if you had stayed with them, then they would have survived?" Levi looked at the ground. He believed that Erwin said.
"My pride caused the end of their lives."
"No! The titans caused it! We know almost nothing about those creatures. Fight for the humanity Levi! Give up on my assassination and you don't have to go back to the underground." Levi just stood there but guilt was still in his eyes. "Don't regret anything. If you do, then you will let other people make your decisions."

Erwin turned around to walk back to his horse but I was faster and caught his arm and forced him to face with me.
"Yes (Y/N)?"
"Let me see it." I wanted to grab his injured hand but he pulled it away.
"It's just a scratch. Nothing more." I raised an eyebrow but nodded and let him go. He went over his horse but before he got on the animal he checked the saddle and hissed in pain. I went over to him and Erwin looked at me.
"Erwin... Show me your hand." I said sternly.
"(Y/N). I said it's nothing."
"Would you say the same if I applied pressure on it? Do you want to figure it out?" He sighed but let me took his hand in mine. His wound wasn't too serious but it was deep enough to leave a scar after healing. I cleaned the injury and put a bandage on it, after that we countinued our way.

About a week later we arrived back to the HQ. Levi fought well and save several soldiers. It seemed he really became reconciled to the idea of staying with the corps and follow the orders.

//Time skip//

"As you know today the survey corps are going to have a new commander. He has proved his skills and never stepped back when he had to solve a problem." Shadis said and turned towards Erwin who were standing in front of us. The older male took a bolo tie and put it around the new leader's neck. "Congratulations commander Erwin Smith." They shook hands. And we all saluted when Shadis yelled the 'give your heart' part.
