Chapter 23

I felt his eyes on my. Those penetrable green eyes, that seemed to toss like a storm at sea, revealed under his dark, shaggy wind- swept hair. I wanted nothing more that to lean in and look closer into them and be close to him. A moment later he smiled up at me, with that devilish smirk and I slap myself mentally to try and get my thought’s back.

“Pace,” I sighed, “I need to ask you some questions.”

“Sure, what would you like to know,” Pace look curiously at me, his chin in his hands.

I take a deep breath, “first, I want to know about when I got attacked in the ally and why. I also need to know about these ‘killing’ that have been going on. I heard of then and asked, but no one has answered.”

His eyes squinted at me; he looked at me for a moment before replying carefully. “To answer your first question, I have to answer the second one first…” he trails off.

I wait impatiently for twenty seconds before speaking up. “Well, are you-“

He puts a hand up to stop me. “ Just give me a second, trying to word this out, k?”

“One Mississippi…” I mumble and he rolls his eyes.

“The killing you have heard about in New York, well, they started about a half a year agoe Sure lots of people die in New York, but within two weeks 5 Gingers had died. These were murders, not homicides; all victims were found face down with a silk green handkerchief tied around their necks with the letter “SG”, stitched on it. The N.T.P.D. (New York Police Department) suspects gang activity, but no one has any major clues about what’s going on. Normally we tend to stay out of this kind of thing, but the fact that 97% of the killings, that are going on in New York right now, are Gingers, and it’s put’s us on edge. My personal opinion, I think it is one person, and they’re after something…” he trails once more into silence.

Shit, this, even from the surface, was kind of disturbing.

“He wants something?” I ask.

“Yes, I think he, or she, is trying to get, or find something that has to do with Gingers. Well, they have blown up some warehouses on the out skirts of the city, and ransacked a home and some jewelry stores…” I could see that he was just as uncertain about this as I was. He stared, unblinking, out the plane window.

“Pace?”

“Sorry, did you have another question for me?” he snaps back to my attention.

“Um… well, have you found anything about my brother?” hope seemed to rise as I looked at him.

“No, sorry Nova,” Pace says and I couldn’t help but feel my face fall. I turn away so as to try and hide my disappointment. I had to keep hoping, couldn’t not. I was putting my faith in Pace, though I didn’t know why. Ever since I met him, I felt; well, more loved, you know, being with some one who understands you, and excepts you. Oh and not to mention his HOT looks and the dark mystery, that seemed to liger around him, like a hazy dark veil, obscuring, his true character.

A warm, gentle touch on cheek pulls me back to present. I look up. Pace and I are just inches away, his hand cupping my face. I could hardly breath as his eyes looked down into mine, see into my soul. I lean, automatically, into his hand.

“I swear to you, with all my soul, that all keep looking, never stop, until we find him, until your satisfied. Just, don’t give up hope,” he whispers, his warm, sweet, breath brushing my face.

All I could do was swallow hard and bob my head. I stared harder into his eyes as the electricity coursed though us. My eyes widened and his tightened. I knew he felt it too. The moment I had laid eyes on him, there was attraction and I didn’t give a flip if he had a girlfriend or not.

His eyes moved, from mine, to my lips and I leaned into him and-

The door opened with a loud bang and we both jumped back.

“Oh, sorry to interrupt!” Queen Riley giggled from the doorway, “but Pace, your father needs to talk to you,” she smile at me, “and Nova, it will be about fifteen or so until we land.”

Pace got up and left. Before the queen slid the door shut, she smiled and winked at me. I wonder how such a smiley, cheery person could be married to a stern faced, serous man. Had it been an arranged marriage or not.

One thing I was a fact: Pace had almost kissed me.
