"I'll be right back with that sprite, Ella," Kennedy's Pop said as he walked back into the kitchen.
"So, tell us about yourself," Kennedy's Dad began again.
"What would you like to know?" I asked nervously. I wasn't sure what they wanted to know about me, and I didn't want to offend my future fathers-in-law.
"Where were you raised?" Kennedy's Pop asked.
"Oh, I was raised in Wyoming," I smiled at them. I knew the state and home I grew up in is very homophobic, but I'm sure that they wouldn't hold that against me.
"That's a big step, from there to California. Why did you come here?" Kennedy's Dad looked at me suspiciously.
"W-well," I was nervous, he was glaring at me as if I had only come here to hurt Kennedy, "I told my parents my soulmate lived here, and they decided that they should let me come to her. Of course, they and I didn't know Kennedy was going to be a her..." I smiled nervously as I tucked my blonde hair behind my ear.
"Homophobic family?" Kennedy's Dad asked.
I nodded, "Family's can be tough," He smiled at me sympathetically, as if he had gone through something similar in his past, "You are always welcome here," He ended as soon as Kennedy's Pop came back into the room with my sprite.
"Here you go Ella, sorry it took so long, I had to dig in the back of the fridge," He handed it to me with a smile and sat down next to his husband.
I smiled as I took a sip of my sprite. It had been a while since I've felt this at ease. It was just so easy to be a part of this family.
BOOM! The door was opened loudly, "Hey, Mr. and Mr. Hart, how's it going?"
I spun around to look at the intruding figure. She was very tall with long straight black hair, she was really tall, and deep brown eyes and she was very obviously Native American.
"And who is this chick?" She said pointing to me.
"Oh, this is Ella," Kennedy's Pop said.
"Ah, the infamous Ella that Kennedy has been talking all about," She paused, moving some of her hair out of her face, "I'm Scarlett, by the way," She held out her hand for me to shake.
I shook her hand. She was cute, but I obviously thought Kennedy was more attractive than her.
At that moment, Kennedy walked down the stairs and said, "Scarlett, you aren't trying to steal my girl now are you?"
"Haha, yeah right," She rolled her eyes and we disconnected hands and she put hers in her pockets.
Kennedy looked stunning. She had on some blue sweatpants and a loose t-shirt. Her hair was up in a messy bun on top of her head.
"You're staring Angel," Kennedy smirked at me, fixing her bun slightly.
I blushed and looked away quickly.
"Oh my God, that's so adorable," Kennedys Pop smiled happily at me, "Scarlett, Kennedy, would you like to join us?" He gestured towards the table.
"Sure," Scarlett smiled and sat away from me so that Kennedy could sit next to me. Kennedy noticed what Scarlett did and sat next to me quickly.
"S-so..." I started, "Have you found your soulmate, Scarlett?"
"HA! No!" She started laughing.
"What's so funny?" I asked seriously.
"She's ace/aro Angel," Kennedy tried to explain.
"She's what now?" I asked confused.
"I forget, you didn't grow up around gay culture," Kennedy sighed rubbing her temples, "She is asexual and aromantic, which means she doesn't feel sexual or romantic attraction," Kennedy finished her explanation.
"Ohhh," I nodded understanding. Although I've never met someone who doesn't experience these types of attraction, having experienced them myself I knew the difference between sexual and romantic attraction. I feel both towards Kennedy.
"I'm sorry I laughed at you," Scarlett said regaining her composure, "It's just been a while since I've had someone ask me that question without it being a complete joke."
I smiled at her, "No worries, I'm just not very used to gay culture, I was born and raised in Wyoming, which isn't necessarily a homophobic state, but I was never introduced to these ideas until recently," I hoped my explanation would be enough to explain how uncultured I am.
"You don't need to explain your ignorance, I'm just glad you aren't like the dicks in school who say I don't exist and that everyone has an attraction to at least some people, they don't even understand that romantic and sexual are two different things," She said then rolled her eyes.
"Kids are jerks, I know cause I used to be one," Kennedy's Dad said.
"You aren't wrong Max," Scarlett said. Max. I noted, his name was Max.
"Oh, honey, I feel so bad, we forgot to tell Ella what our names are..." Mr. Hart put his hands up to his mouth, feeling super bad.
"Well, there's no time like the present to fix our informalities," Max laughed, "I'm Max and my husband's name is Kevin,"
"I'm Ella, but you guys already knew that. It's nice to officially meet you," I put on my most charming smile.
"Kennedy, darling, she's quite a catch,"
"Pop, she's my soulmate..." It was Kennedy's turn to blush.
"I know that, but, she's such a great match for you!" He exclaimed excitedly.
"Kay, Pop," She said with a stern look, Kevin immediately stopped talking.
"Sorry sweetpea," He said with a nervous smile.
"Well, are we going to get dinner or?" Scarlett asked.
"How about we go out?" Max suggested, "What's your favorite type of food Ella?"
I really like Mexican, but I didn't want to make them go somewhere they were uncomfortable.
"Oh, I don't really care, wherever is fine," I said being very polite.
"Angel, what kind of food do you want?" Kennedy smiled softly at me.
I returned the soft smile, "C-can we get Mexican?" I asked softly.
"Of course Angel,"
"Oh, hell yeah! Mexican is the best!" Scarlett jumped up from her chair.
Max and Kevin also got up and headed to the front door. Kennedy soon followed taking my hand in hers, and we ran after the group, as we headed towards a great Mexican adventure.
