chapter one: blueberry pie filled with love

James Potter rubbed his eyes as he lay on his bed, ignoring the soft snores of his friends before he stood up and walked downstairs to the Gryffindor Common room where a small flicker of light came from the seemingly always lit fireplace. The room was bathed in a warm glow, everything around him being barely visible. He trudged toward it and sat down, wearing flannel pajama pants with a white shirt. It wasn't that the poor boy was cold, no not at all, it was that the poor boy was recovering from a broken heart.

The train ride up to Hogwarts was not as pleasant as he thought it was going to be when he saw Lily Evans, her slightly guilt-ridden face as she suggested they talk alone in a compartment. James was never serious about his future, just wanting to get through his years at Hogwarts and worry about the future later but Lily didn't want that. She wanted a future and certainty and that was something that James Potter could not guarantee and although he knew it was for the best, he was having a harder time convincing his broken heart.

He shook his head, swearing slightly under his breath and pushing up his glasses as the fire did nothing to help him with the cold inside his chest. His stomach gave out a slight gurgle prompting James to frown before an idea came to mind. Usually, he'd wake Sirius for an adventure to the kitchen, knowing that he loved a midnight snack but James decided to go alone. He stepped out of the common room, shivering as his feet came into contact with the cool flooring, ignoring the snoring fat lady on the door as he shut it softly.

Hogwarts used to be slightly eerier for him at night during his earlier years but now he had just entered his seventh year and he felt untouchable, not that he hadn't in his previous years. He quickly made his way down to the kitchens, stopping as he noticed small flickering candlelight, coming from underneath the door. His stomach gurgled again as if sensing his hesitation of not wanting to deal with the house-elves or a professor.

But as he slowly pushed open the door, he was met with a completely different sight of a girl sitting with her back to him. A pair of headphones sat on her ears, her short blonde hair being pushed behind them and in front of her was a blueberry pie that had a slow stream of steam coming from it. And when James saw that blueberry pie, he knew he would kill for even a sliver. The boy walked up cautiously behind her before tapping her shoulder causing the girl to jump up out of shock.

"Merlin!"James put his hands in front of him and shook his head as he looked at her wide and frantic eyes.

"Sorry, uh, didn't mean to give you a fright there." The girl had her hand on her chest as if to bestill her erratic beating heart before she took off her headphones, placing them next to the just-finished pie.

"You're not a house-elf, what're you doing in the kitchens?" The girl smiled lightly before walking away, grabbing a plate from the table and going toward the freshly baked pie.

"The house-elves leave here at 9 pm and I decided that what I truly needed was a pie. A blueberry pie specifically."

James watched as she served up a pie for herself before sighing to herself and grabbing the other plate she had. She didn't even have to take a glance at him to know that his mouth was watering and his stomach yearned for a slice.

"Would you like a piece?" James looked at the pie and instantly nodded, amazed by the top of it that had been latticed.

"I would love one, thank you." James took a seat next to her by the table as she handed him the plate. They both sat in silence apart from their cutlery banging against the plates before James took his first bite of the pie, his eyes widening as it seemed to melt into his mouth.

"Merlin, this is the best blueberry pie I've ever had. What did you put in this?" James found his mouth salivating at the thought of taking another bite whilst flavor still exploded on his tongue. He couldn't describe how the pie made him feel, the soft crust giving him the feeling of a warm hug and the blueberries reminding him of when he was younger and things were simple.

"Well Blueberries, sweet stuff, and a little bit of alcohol to make myself sleep better." James noticed her little chuckle, a smile coming onto his own face from the sound. The cold chest that he had was replaced by a beautiful warmth that others only dreamed of achieving. He felt safe and comforted, his attention moved away from the pie and went to the girl who actually made it.

She had a small bit of flour on her cheek and she had soft blue eyes that looked as if she had a beautiful, bright sunny day encaptured in them. The soft candlelight flickered making her face have shadows from the pieces of her that dangled in front of her face. He had not a clue what her name was and he was mentally kicking his younger self for not meeting her earlier. James caught himself staring and looked away, seeing her turn her head in the corner of his eye and face him.

"Matilda Allens." James looked down at her outstretched hand before taking it within his own, shaking her hand.

"James Potter." Matilda smiled and retracted her hand before standing up, placing her walkman in her pajama shorts pocket and grabbing her book. She, of course, already knew his name. How could she not, he was essentially the golden boy of Hogwarts but she appreciated the introduction.

"Well James, since you seemed to enjoy my pie so much, you can take it." Matilda began to walk away as James sat in the chair, his eyes focused on her until she shut the door. James sat, confused at the strange encounter he had just had with a girl he had never seen before. He finished the piece on his plate and wrapped up the leftover pie, taking it back up to his dorm room. He walked through the door and spotted Sirius sitting up in his bed, the tip of his hand glowing as he rubbed his eyes.

"Where'd you go, Prongs? Was worried that you'd gone on an adventure without me?" James sat down on his bed, looking down at the wrapped-up pie in his hands, feeling the warmth of it spread throughout his entire body. Sirius stood up and leaned against James' four-poster bed, looking down at the wrapped-up object with great curiosity.

"Just down to the kitchens, there was a girl." Sirius raised an eyebrow and looked back down at the package as James unwrapped it. As soon as Sirius laid eyes on the blueberry pie that had been slightly crushed, he licked his lips. Sirius reminded himself to focus and he almost wanted to shake his head at James who stared at the pie in front of him. James Potter was a bit of a hopeless romantic and Sirius almost envied him for it.

"A girl gave you a pie?" Sirius asked, his hand resting underneath his chin as he watched James nod his head slowly while still looking at the said pie.

"Well, give it over. I want some." James rolled his eyes as Sirius went off to find a fork but his mind went back to Matilda Allens, the girl with the sky in her eyes.

So this is kinda just a lil start chapter, I swear they'll get a little bit longer but yeah, I'm just trying to figure out the characterizations and all that rubbish.

Thanks, Queenie
