chapter thirty: reunions make matilda cry
"James!" The squeak from Matilda's lips alerted the man who jumped up from his spot on the couch and rushed upstairs towards the noise.
"Are you alright, love?" James burst through the door expecting to walk in on a disastrous scenario, only to see his lovely woman with her foot stuck between two of the bars at the bottom of the bed. She had her hand reaching for her wand that had rolled onto the floor, Ozmo looking at the wand and back up at Matilda with his head tilted in confusion.
"You're a bit daft, aren't you?" James laughed as he freed her, kissing her ankle as she glared at him, pulling her foot away. It was Halloween, the first one in a while that they had not spent at Hogwarts and it also happened to be the night where all of their friends were going to reunite. Evan and Gabi had sent postcards from their time in Sweden, Spain, Morocco, and a whole lot of other places but tonight would be the first time she would see them since graduation.
It was more a reunion for them than anyone else considering James had his mates over all the time and Louisa was currently living with Sirius, a shock to all his friends who had thought the man would be a bachelor for life. It was an odd time and also a dangerous time in the wizarding world. James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter had all joined the order in an effort to defeat Voldemort who had returned to Britain to overthrow the ministry, something that most definitely could never happen.
It was also a strange time for the two women who didn't consider themselves good enough at dueling and fighting to join them so they sat idly by as Sirius and James went out and fought for the order. Matilda worried about James, quite often when he was gone, sometimes the boy was off for days and she sat in their home alone, trying to knit her worries away.
But at least from James' connection in the order, the couple had made some new friends in the form of Gideon and Fabian Prewett and Frank and Alice Longbottom. They'd all be coming to theirs tonight to party and Matilda could not have been more delighted.
"I've got to go open the shop!" James laughed as he watched the girl jump up, beginning to strip her clothes off at a fast speed.
"I thought Poppy was going to do the day today?" James asked with a small frown, sitting on the bed as he watched her rush about.
"She was but her little one is under the weather so I gave her the week off." James grabbed her hand as she rushed by him causing her to pause and look down at his puppy dog eyes that her want to melt into a puddle. Those damned puppy dog eyes could get her to start wars.
"But I thought we'd spend the day together." Matilda shook her head to try and get out of her daze, bending over and putting her hands on his slightly scruffy cheeks, and giving him a gentle kiss. She was quick to pull away and keep a hold of his cheeks, a smile quirking back onto her lips.
