Alec leaned against his bedroom doorway just watching his son sleep peacefully in the middle of the bed. He moved to lay next to him after a few minutes and he carefully wrapped his arms around Max safely cocooning him in his embrace. Alec buried his face trying to fall asleep since he's had a long day but all he could think about was Magnus. The way he walked around the dining room as if he walked in air. The small smile he gave every time someone complimented his outfit. The way his hands were soft when they laid over his own. The way his lips felt for that brief second of a kiss. Alec sighed talking out load "what are we gonna do monkey?" He gently ran his fingers through Max's hair "should we call him?" He kissed Max gently on the temple. "Maybe we can try in the morning once the adrenaline wears off." He closed his eyes tightly knowing, hoping, he would fall asleep eventually. His mind however continued to wander. Continued to think of the what if's. What if he dates Magnus. What if it didn't work out. What if after what if caused Alec to hold Max a little tighter hoping it would help relax him enough to sleep. Eventually he dozed off holding the one person he loved most in the world.
Magnus sat in a chair in his loft, a martini in hand, swirling it slowly as he stared at the balcony doors. He lifted the martini to his lips taking a sip before opening his phone to type a message to Alec. He typed, deleted, typed, and the cycle repeated before he tossed the phone aside groaning. He downed the rest of his drink standing after setting the glass aside moving to go take a shower, knowing, hoping the warm water would wash the day away and he could relax some. He rubbed his neck as he walked back into his living room, towel wrapped around his waist. He grabbed his phone checking to see if he missed anything before going to his room typing a message as he walked. "Thanks for tonight Alexander. We should talk. Get some rest you've earned it." He thought for a moment before hitting send setting his phone on the night stand getting changed for bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow with one image playing on repeat as he slept. The look Alec gave him after he pulled away from the kiss.
Alec yawned burying his face in his pillow smiling because he could feel a little hand playing with the sleeve of his shirt and could hear a small child like voice whisper "daddy you wake now? I want cereal." Alec shifted pulling his son into a bear hug pressing kisses all over his face causing Max to giggle. "Dada!" He squeaked burying his face in Alex's chest laughing softly. Alec laughed squeezing his son gently. "Good morning my monkey. How about instead of cereal you and I go to that cafe you like." Max pulled away quickly looking at his father with wide excited eyes. "The one with the hot chocolate and sprinkles and the chicken flavored waffles!" Alec laughed shaking his head lovingly "chicken and waffles love not chicken flavored waffles but yes that's the one." Max nodded happily hopping out of bed quickly moving to throw a shirt at his dad. "Hurry daddy." Alec grinned moving to help his son find clothes and to pack their bag for the day. As Alec brushed his teeth and fixed his hair Max looked at him saying softly "why are we going daddy? We only ever go if it's my birthday or if you have sad news. It's not my birthday which means there must be sad news." Alec rinsed his mouth before lifting Max off the counter propping him on his hip. "There's no sad news monkey. Daddy just thought since he's been so busy working and helping a friend that spending the day together would be nice just the two of us, but only if you want to." Max laid his head on Alec's shoulder nodding "yes please daddy." Alec grabbed the back pack heading to the car a smile of his face.
Alec sat sipping a coffee as he watched his son gleefully eating his chicken and waffles, a chocolate mustache on his upper lip from drinking a hot chocolate. He took his phone from his pocket to take a picture a small smirk on his face knowing Max would hate him taking a picture of him while he ate but Alec didn't care he loved moments like this. He thought for a moment before opening the message he had received from Magnus and sending the photo of Max to him with the message "can't talk busy with this monkey for the day." Alec put his phone back down and Max was just staring at him his head tilted slightly. "What monkey?" Max sat back in his chair "were you texting your friend?" Alec nodded opening his mouth to say something but Max cut him off "do you like your friend daddy?" Alec tilted his head "of course I like my friend. He wouldn't be my friend if I disliked him monkey." Max rolled his eyes. He really does take after his aunt Izzy. "No daddy do you like your friend the way auntie likes Simon and uncle Jace likes Clary and grandma likes Luke." Alec paused not sure what to say and Max set his fork down after taking the last bite of his food before reaching his little arm over to hold Alec's hand. "It's ok if you do daddy and it's ok if you don't." Alec gave a tight lipped smile nodding and he kissed Max's hand before lifting him up to go pay. As he did he wondered when his son became so smart.
