Wow. That was one hell of a Big Mac.
You and Stephen had finished eating and were now headed for the park. Once you reached there, you excitedly skipped towards the entrance.
Golden brown leaves floated down from the trees. The sun was setting and everything looked so beautiful and warm.
"Hey hold up!" Stephen said as he ran up to you.
"Wow this park is so pretty!" You said. Your eyes were bright and innocent, it made Stephen smile to himself.
"Oh oh oh" you were almost jumping. You felt like a child with a sugar rush. You ran towards the fountain and let your fingers brush the surface of the water, causing it to ripple.
After you had calmed down a little, the two of you started walking around the park, side by side. Stephen looked around and he saw a boy, around his own age. The boy looked at you, then to stephen and mouthed "nice catch".
Stephen didnt understand at first. But then he looked around and realized that most of the people here were couples, all holding hands and being lovey dovey. Then he looked at you, and realized what the boy was referring to: the boy thought that you were stephen's girlfriend.
Stephen started to blush like crazy. He was glad that he could blame the cold wind for his red cheeks.
Stephen was thinking to himself when you said, "Oh shit! Duck!"
He hadnt had time to react to what you just said, but he saw you jump into some random bush. He could see your face through the leaves, your index finger on you lips. "Shh"
Stephen knew you did weird things sometimes (ahem ahem flashback to the 3 am kitchen meeting) but this took him by surprise.
"Dude! Stephen is that you?" Stephen looked up and saw his college mate.
"Oh hey Mark."
Fuck. That name broke your heart every single time you heard it. That guy once told you that he loved you. That voice broke up with you over the phone. You could feel your tears, threatening to roll down you cold cheeks.
"Whatcha doing here? All by yourself?" Mark laughed as he gently punched Stephen's arm.
Stephen glanced at you, squashed in the bushes.
"Umm," he was unsure of what to say, "I think so"
"Hahaha! What's that spose to mean? Did your date ditch you?"
"Nah. She's.... around. What about you?"
You heard a pair of heels walking toward your direction.
"Right here" That was Mark's voice.
Mark was joined by a girl, who was his date apparently.
Stephen looked at the familiar girl and sub-consciously frowned and bit his inner cheek.
"Oh hey Stephen!"
"Hey, Scarlet."
You could tell stephen was not comfortable anymore. Your brain was having a debate of its own; should you keep your pride aside and help Stephen or should you be a bad friend and hide in the bushes.
Oh well. I owe him one for the treat and the jacket anyway. At least i didnt need the universe to help me decide.
As soon as you were preparing to get up and join the awkward party, a dog sniffed at the bush you had taken refuge in.
Hm? Do i smell good to you doggy?
It lifted its hind leg and it struck you that this male dog was going to take a piss.
You body acted on it's own as you leaped out of the bushes, landing in the middle of the people you were going to join.
"God dammit universe. I was gonna get out on my own you didnt have to do that" you muttered to yourself.
It took a second for you to take in what just happened. You immediately looked at Stephen.  He just stared at you.
Oh no did I embarrass him. Shit shit shit-
Then Stephen's eyes softened and he smiled. He was glad that you decided to pop out.
Seeing him smile, you knew you had made the right decision. You didnt give a rats arse about Mark right now.
"(Y-Y/N)? Stephen, this is your date?" You turned to face Mark. He looked like he had seen a ghost. Mark just stared at you in disbelief. You stared back a little coldly; you wanted to prove that you were over him.
"Yeah," He said
You felt butterflies in your stomach and you allowed yourself to smile a little.
"What happened, Mark? Why are you staring at (Y/N) like she has 3 heads?" Stephen asked. He genuinely didn't know your connection with Mark, but it was obviously not a pleasant one.
"No, my bad. Hey (y/n)"
"Hey Mark," you said, nonchalantly.
Stephen calmly wrapped his arm around your waist, and brought his lips closer to you ear.
"It's almost 6:30. I want to show you something before we go." He said, loud enough for Mark to hear.
"See you around then, stephen. See ya (y/n)."
The gorgeous girl smiled at you and walked away with Mark.
"phEEeWww" you laughed and so did Stephen.
Stephen bent down all of a sudden.
"What's wrong?"
He started to tie your shoe lace, which had come undone when you were hiding.
"Even children i teach can tie their laces on their own"
You were flustered and decided to change the topic.
"So what did you want to show me?"
He lead you to some swings and slides; kids played there during the day, but right now it was empty. The both of you fooled around and had tonnes of fun and before you knew it, it was 7:30.
"Looks like playtime's over. Dan'll get mad if we're late"
"Wait, (y/n) one last question."
You stopped and faced him.
"What's your history with Mark?"
You looked away but you owed Stephen an answer.
"I dated him in high school, when i came here as a transfer student."
Stephen's reaction was not what you had expected.
"Heh. What a coincidence that my ex and your ex are together now."
Your eyes widened as you turned to see a smiling Stephen.
"That gorgeous beauty is your ex?!"
"She isnt all that beautiful. Trust me."
"Oh." You understood what he meant.
You wanted to ask why there was some tension between Stephen and the girl, but you decided not to because then he'd ask you about you and Mark again.
You didnt want to talk about Mark. You wanted to move on so badly, and you had. But it was tough. After all, Mark had shown you how it felt to be loved, but he also showed you how it felt to have a broken heart.
