"So this is where you live?" Connor asked.
"Yeah. There used to be more Lunarians, and now I'm the last one left."
"You mentioned that before. What happened?"
"Civil War. The Lunarian Emperor died, with two heirs. They were twins, and no one knew which was older. The only one who did was their mother, who had died alongside the Emperor. They gathered supporters and created two armies. After a while, they started kidnapping people to fight for them. People began to fear for their lives, and some killed themselves. The armies eventually became very small, about a hundred on each side, and they all killed each other. Both heirs were lost in the final fight, as well as many soldiers. Without an Emperor, people died off. I was born during the conflict, and so having no Emperor didn't make a difference. Eventually I became the last Lunarian. I thought about stowing away on a Dome Head box, but every time I tried they left without me."
"Why did people die without the Emperor?" Connor asked.
"When people are born, they take a blood oath to serve the Emperor and any of his heirs. If the bloodline of the Emperor dies off, so do the people."
"Well thats just stupid. Why would you risk your entire race on one person?"
"It stops assassinations and mutinies. It makes people have to trust in their leader."
"That makes sense... I guess. But there is one more thing I'm curious about. The Scrolls of Life. What's up with them?"
"They were created by the very first Emperor, and only the Emperor is allowed to see them. They are sacred to the Lunarians, but now that there is no Emperor, and I am the last one left, so it shouldn't be a problem for me to see them." Kate walked over to the fountain and sat on the edge. She stared up at the roof of the dome.
"The Scrolls of Life could foresee the future, and would provide a solution for major problems that happened in the future. Lack of Oxygen just happened to be one of those problems."
"Well lucky for us." Connor had walked over and sat next to Kate. She had a look of realization on her face.
"Kate? Did you figure something out?"
"Connor! Don't you get it? The Scrolls are meant to solve the major problems that will happen in the future. Connor, you were meant to come to the moon!"
"Are you sure it wasn't for if humans migrate to the moon? It might not be necessarily me that was meant to come to the moon. It could be for when other humans come to the moon.
"Dome Head, just accept it."
"I'm just laying out the possibilities, Moon Girl."
"I told you not to call me that! I am not 'Moon Girl' I am Kate! You know I hate being called that."
"Fine! Then stop calling me Dome Head!"
"No deal. I'll just reverse the spell that lets you breathe..."
"Wait! I'll stop calling you Moon Girl! What's wrong with that name anyway?"
"As I told you, I am a Lunarian. And, When I am called Moon Girl, it sounds as if I'm the only one on the moon."
"But you are the only one on the moon."
"That's why it bugs me. It reminds me that I'm alone. That I'm the only, and the last Lunarian."
"You can turn a joke serious in no time Kate."
"Oh well. You've stopped calling me that, so all is good!" Kate's face turned from a friendly smile to a death stare. "But call me that again, and you will be begging me for forgiveness."
"Gahh! I-I-I w-w-won't ever call you t-that again. Promise!" Connor tried to hide his fear.
"Anyway, I think I should show you around the dome. You'll need to know how to get around here, although it's hard to get lost. Trust me." Kate had returned to her usual upbeat self. She stood up from the fountain, and began walking.
"Come on slowpoke! You coming or not!"
"Coming Kate!" Connor shot up from his seat on the fountain and ran to catch up with Kate.
Although she's scary at times, she is a really nice girl. And from what she's said she has been alone for years. She probably hasn't ever had a real friend until now. Connor thought.
