Connor looked over at the date once again. July 20th 2501. The day that humans move to Mars. Connor already had all his stuff packed, Although there wasn't much of it. Now, all that was left was to head to the ship. He had just one more hour on Earth, and then he was going to be shipped off through outer space to his new home on Mars.
Scientists have spent years researching ways for human life to be sustained on Mars, and have finally reached a solution. They decided that after living on Mars for a few years, our bodies will adapt to the environment. That's why the only people who can go have to be under the age of twenty.
"Ugh. Why do we have to go to Mars anyway? It's because of us that the Earth is like this, so why should we try to save ourselves?" Connor muttered to himself. He was mad at the human race. He always has, and going to Mars probably won't change anything. Humans have made the planet a horrible place to live, and it's because of them that nobody can live more than thirty years.Ever since the war of 2474, all the water has been poisoned, as a way to kill off enemy troops. After the war, the poison spread from just one lake, to the entire planet. They polluted the air so much, that in some places you can't see anything. It's the humans fault, and now they're abandoning their dying planet to save themselves?
Taking one last look at the home Connor would soon be leaving, he set off to get on the ship. It was a short walk, as the ship was docked just down the road. He walked towards the ship, trying not to think of the new world he was going to live on. Other people were walking out of their houses, some alone, some with family, and others with their friends. Connor followed a woman carrying a small child into the building that contained the ship.
The building was almost completely white, the floors, the walls, and the ceiling. It had a huge dome roof, and it smelt like floor polish. The floor squeaked if you dragged your feet even a little, so everybody practically marched to the ship. The ship itself was huge, it had enough space to cram over a hundred people into it, but was made to carry just 50 and their luggage. The ship itself was shaped like an airplane, even though with technology today, it could have looked like a pineapple if they wanted it to.
Connor got into the line waiting to board. He got out his ticket and waited for them to scan it, making sure it was authentic. While waiting for the scanning robot to scan his ticket, Connor looked over at the giant mirror on the wall. He hadn't noticed it before. He looked at himself, if nobody brought mirrors then he may never see himself again. He was never self-conscious about how he looked, mostly because he spent his time alone.
The scanning robot scanned finished scanning the ticket of the person in front of Connor, and now it was Connor's turn. The robot scanned the ticket that Connor held out, beeped, and shone a green light saying it was good. The robot then went along, scanning tickets.
Not long after Connor's ticket was scanned, the robot made a loud noise signalling that it was done.
The line began to move and everyone got onto the ship. Connor found an empty seat and sat down. Robots came by and took his luggage to the cargo bay. Connor kept a small carry on bag that contained a few books. He began to read the first book he picked out of the bag, a book called Space Detective Greg:To Mars!, but his current situation made it very hard for him to read it. Instead he pulled out another book. It was a non-fiction book about the moon. He found it actually quite interesting.
"Attention Passengers! We have a slight problem. We are 20 pounds over the weight limit, and so someone is going to have to jump ship. Don't worry, your luggage will still arrive safely. Would the passenger in seat 45 please stand. Connor looked up from his book. Looking at his seat number he was seat 44. He was so close to death it was crazy.
"No please no! Not my baby! I won't let you take him!" The person screaming was none other than the woman who was carrying the baby that he followed to the ship. Connor was horrified. How could they just kill a child? these people are heartless jerks.
"Sorry ma'am. but seat 45 must be vacated."
"He's not even 20 pounds!"
"No excuses."
"I beg you!" The look in that woman's eyes was enough to make Connor feel horrible. If he had sat in that seat everything would be fine. The child would be safe, and Connor would have an excuse not to go to Mars.
"I'll go instead. I'm seat 44. It's close enough." Connor was terrified. But he wouldn't let them see that.
"Has to be seat 45."
"Then I'm switching seats with this child."
"Fine. Your the new jumper." At least this child is safe now. Connor thought. The man handed Connor an orange spacesuit. Connor pulled it on.
"You have until the oxygen runs out. At least you will get to see the stars as you die." Connor took one last look at the ship before walking towards the door.
"Thank you for saving my baby! Please, take this." The woman handed Connor a piece of paper. He unfolded it and read the note.
Land on the moon. It will save your life. Search for the moon girl. Tell her that Dome Head Ella sent you. Ella is my great-grandmother. The moon girl is a story passed down through my family, and moon girl owes Ella a favour.
Connor was confused by the note, but smiled folded the note and put it in his jean pocket underneath the suit. Connor took a deep breath and stepped towards the door. It opened up into a small room that is just for keeping the oxygen in the ship when the door gets opened into space.
The door closed behind him and multiple locking and sealing procedures took place. Once the door was completely sealed the door in front of him opened. Connor looked out the door. Below him was the moon. It wasn't to far away, and so if he fell far enough, the gravitational pull will bring him down the rest of the way. Although the note confused Connor he felt as if he should at least try to land on the moon.
A monotone voice began to speak.
"Connor Alex Crescent, you are hereby sentenced to death by suffocation. You must now jump to your death. You may land on the moon if you want, but you shall find nothing. It's just the moon." Connor took a deep breath. He closed his eyes. He stepped out of the ship. He didn't fall much. Instead he just floated.
Connor did as the note said and went towards the moon. He did a sort of swimming motion to move closer to the moon until he was almost on it. He then flipped upright so he would land on his feet and wouldn't fall face first. He closed his eyes again while he slowly fell towards the moon. When he opened his eyes again, he was no longer floating. He hadn't even noticed landing.
"Find the moon girl," Connor muttered to himself. He tried to take a step forward, but it was really hard to do. Instead he tried jumping. He pushed off the ground too hard and went way higher than he had expected to.
"Gaaah! How am I supposed to move like this?" Connor complained. In the distance he heard someone laugh.
"Who's there?" The laugh had come from a nearby rock. He tried to walk over to the rock, and with much difficulty, he managed to make it to the rock. He looked behind the rock and was surprised to see no one was there. Then who was it that laughed?
"Looking for someone? I guess you Dome Heads just can't stand being alone." Connor turned around to see a girl, about 16, standing there. She had skin so pale it was basically white, long blond hair, and pale blue eyes. Her ears came to a slight point, and her lips were a light pink. She wore a silver dress, and walked barefoot.
"What? Do I have something on my face Dome Head?"
"Dome Head? My name's Connor. Who are you? And where is your spacesuit?"
"Your name's Connor? I'm Kate. The last Lunarian. And what's a spacesuit?"
"It's what I'm wearing. Are you the moon girl?"
"No, I told you, I'm Kate! Not moon girl."
"Why do you keep calling me Dome Head? My head looks just like yours."
"No it doesn't yours is round and dome-like. Mine looks like a head."
"That's the spacesuit. I need it, otherwise I will die." Connor then remembered the note.
"Umm, Dome Head Ella sent me. Well, her great-granddaughter did." When Connor said Ella, Kate looked at Connor with shock.
