I
"Wes! Wesley! Watch out!" I stare at the glowing eyes of a doe frozen in my headlights. Innocent and afraid. More images flood my vision. Blurry trees, glass shattering, a body ejecting.
I jerk upwards with a yelp, wincing as the pain spreads throughout my right side. "Hey, lay back down."
A hand places itself on my chest, easing me back onto an uncomfortable pillow. My vision's a little hazy, but I can make out shapes and colors, though all are some shade of white. The room I'm in is cold and uninviting, and I can't keep the overbearing antiseptic stench from my nostrils.
As my eyes focus on my surroundings, I finally notice Sarah sitting next to me, her eyes puffy and red. "How are you feeling?"
"I-I don't know. My side hurts like hell."
"Well, you were hit by a car. I'd hit you over the head if you weren't already in pain." She rests her elbows on the hospital bed. "Don't ever do that again, you hear me?"
"No promises, you know I'm an adrenaline junkie."
Her gaze softens, almost in a pleading manner. "I'm being serious, Wes. You can't do stuff like this."
"Is she okay?"
"What?"
"Allison. She's okay, right?"
She lets out a heavy sigh. "Yeah, she's okay. She's actually been in the waiting room for a while. Every thirty minutes her mother tries to drag her out of the hospital. Poor girl feels like it's her fault you're in here."
"It's not her fault I pushed her out of the way." I glance up at Sarah. "Can I see her?"
"I'm gonna go get Dr. Fenris in here, and then maybe I'll let her in after." She rises from the chair, kisses my forehead, then steps out of the room.
I pull down the covers and slowly lift my shirt, grimacing at the deep red road rash that travels from the side of my stomach to just below my chest. I pull it back down, careful not to bump my right arm.
"Mr. Walker?" I groan, jumping at his silent entrance, though he doesn't seem to notice. "I'm Dr. Fenris. I was monitoring you when you were brought in last night."
He pulls a clipboard from the counter, examining it before nodding. "Alright, I have some good news and some bad news."
"Bad news first."
Dr. Fenris flips the clipboard around, showing me an x-ray of my arm. "You see these darker areas? Each spot is where your bone has broken."
I stare at the three different places the dark background separates from my bone. "So, what does that mean?"
"It means you have a comminuted fracture, and unfortunately, you're going to need surgery. I've scheduled the operation at—" He pulls up the sleeve of his white coat, glancing down at a watch latched around his wrist. "At about an hour from now. The good news, however, is other than that, everything should heal perfectly on its own."
I nod, absent-mindedly staring at the empty seat next to the bed, as he gives me a forced smile before twisting open the doorknob. "There's a young lady in the waiting room for you. Would you like for me to let her in?"
I use my left arm to push myself up and mutter a quick, "Yes."
After a few seconds, Allison pushes the door open and bolts to my side. "Wesley, I-I'm so sorry. If I had just been paying attention—"
